Hello everyone,

I had just been accepted into Xavier University of Louisiana Pharmacy, and at this point just need to "pass" my remaining pre-reqs before the date of August 7, 2015. Long story short, I received my acceptance around January 2015 with the following pre-reqs left to complete: Organic II lecture + lab + drill; logic; biostats. At this point I have been able to pass everything else but made an "F" in Organic II during Spring 2015. My situation is now that I need to pass Organic II during Summer I. Now I understand it is not ideal to shoot for a "C", but at this point I have done everything I needed to gain acceptance and I don't want it all to come crashing down over one course. So, please, I need help on how to PASS organic chemistry II. A "C" and I will be on my way to Pharmacy school; anything less, and I'll have wasted my acceptance. Any tips on what to focus on studying and what not would be greatly appreciated.

I used to watch YouTube videos/go to SI, and do problems in the book. I didn't receive a good grade, but I did pass, just study as much as you can, go over the chapters on the exams and make sure you know how to do the problems. If that doesn't work, I say hire a tutor, yes it's extra money, but losing that acceptance and having to reapply and go through the entire process again is way more expensive.

Do you have to retake it at that school? If not, will Xavier accept a Distant Learning course that is from an accredited program? If so, UNE has Online Organic Chemistry II that you can take at your own pace - they give you 16 weeks. The final exam is worth 70% of your grade, but it is proctored AND opened-note and book.

I got a 4.0 in Orgo II, and I would help you but I'm studying for the PCAT. All I can say is make friends in class, go to tutoring if your school offers it, utilize Khan Academy, and study hard.

Learn to memorize the reactions use flashcards, notes, and study group. Hopefully your professor does quizzes that's the only way my professor got me to study.

70% of your grade....... That's ugly. When I took ochem 2, final was super hard and half class failed it but it was only 35% of grade. However, no open book or anything. Actually, I just finish ochem 2 on spring and 9 out of 19 people didn't pass the class, and class started with 40 people

First off, just want to say thanks to everyone for their help. I was wondering is there any specific reactions, etc. that I should have a good grip on. Maybe even things from Orgo I one that I should already have a in my back pocket. I took Orgo I at a community college where the professor gave a "C" as long as you showed up; a "B" for being above average; an "A" for being 10 points above class average. Example, class average is a 35…34 and lower is a "C" (yes, even a ZERO got you a "C"); 34-43 is a "B"; and 44 or higher is an "A"…So sometimes I feel like I walled into Orgo II with a poor foundation to build upon..Maybe I could get your thoughts on tha and what I should know to strengthen my foundation before I begin Orgo II.

Get the book I posted, makes ochem easy as pie.

Organic chemistry II as a second language
This is what I was about to recommend. They are two books for organic noobs(like me). David Klein does a great way of integrating an already difficult material to terms and analogies that we can all understand. I got them both before going into my orgo classes and ended up doing well. I highly recommend them for anybody struggling/preparing for organic chemistry.

Go to all your lectures, go to review sessions, make friends in class, and study ahead for the ACS exam

At my school we do a "drill" system? Maybe it is normal to you guys but I've never heard of it. So, basically it is just a hour and a half class which I attend three days a week (Mon, Wed, Fri) and on every single one of those days I have a "drill" worth 50 points. So for the summer you're talking about 3 drills a week for five weeks on top of the two 100 point exams and the 200 point final. Was just wondering if any of y'all have heard of this.

If you have the means, Course Saver. My Ochem 2 discussion class was small enough (2 people) that my TA spent most of his time with us. I'd attend the office hours of your TAs/professor as much as possible.

For refreshing Ochem 1, you can Google for some of the books already mentioned here. There might be some PDFs in your favor. 🙂

Memorization is key at that point. You can totally rock it as long as you stay focused and give your brain a break once you feel like you really need it.
