What are the different ways to pay for med schools? I know about the primary care loans and if you work in rural areas, but are there other ways? Hospital jobs or anything I can take before I go into med school that will help pay? I really don't want to have a bunch of loans, I mean, no one does.

I really don't know any details, but I would assume the military has some sort of program. Like I said, I don't know anything about that type of stuff, though, so check out the separate forums if you are interested.

Sometimes hospitals have scholarships for their volunteers who have been there for a while. I know the BI in Boston has a scholarship for volunteers who've done >200 hrs of service in two years or more who are working towards a degree in a healthcare related field.

Navy Health Service Program (or its called something like that). They pay for x years of med school (tuition, books, equipment, living stipend (pretty good one too)) and you give them x years of your career (either before or after you do residency).

You could also work if you really wanted to.

Also a lot of jobs you can take on after residency (not necessarily rural - just underserved specialties - I've heard of a lot of primary care programs, some OB/gyn, some EM) that either have loan repayment (you get your salary plus they pay x amount of your loans every year) or you just get paid a ridiculous amount of money to work there and can easily pay off your loans (know a girl about to be paid 400k/year in EM somewhere in Texas).

Basically, you're going to have loans. Period. Just accept it and you can worry about how you want to pay it back later.

I heard stripping pays well.

But really just take out loans, as a doctor you will surely make back the money.

:idea:marry someone rich...very very rich😉

Lottery

Try these numbers 12 25 8 2 33 and 49

Personally, i'd planned on buying one of those above ground swimming pools, filling it with jello, and paying a bunch of hot, fabrically challenged ladies to wrestle around in it. $5 cover charge, and afterward i'm selling off the jello for $7.85 a shot.

Ask Oprah. Maybe she'll help.

Ok, to be serious... most people can't go without loans... I know I can't. 🙂

yeah i have thought about being 200 grand in debt...it's not appealing, but i know a doctor and dentist (married) who went through entirely on loans and had them repaid in 5 years...you just have to be willing to live frugally i think.

Very few (I would estimate <10%) medical students don't take out loans. The rest of us sign our lives away into debt.... that is just the facts. If you are worried about this maybe think about doing a MD/PhD program. You can apply to these any time internally at most medical schools... they usually waive tuition and give you a stipend for living. However, you are signing away another 3 years to do bench work. Is it worth the trade? Well, it may be a better option than taking an army scholarship, but you still are gonna pay your dues. I think really the best thing you can look into is probably programs for new physicians in rural or low income areas... a lot of these that are affiliated with the government will waive your loans if you participate in them. Just another option to look into after the fact. As for paying in advance... The lottery is your best shot.

Yeah loans. I already have about $30,000 for just undergrad. And I don't want to go into any kind of military branch and I haven't been volunteering at hospitas, most don't take volunteers and I'm pretty sure med school and a job is going to be too much. Are there unlimited loans? Because I know for undergrad, there was a limit. If there's a limit, I don't know how else to pay for it. And not all docotors get paid a lot. I know a few who don't. Sighhhhhhhh.

yea..the navy sent me a brochure..basically, you give them 2 yrs, and they give you (supposedly) about 150k-200k to cover your med school bills/tuition/etc.

Marry me!

The military will usually pay your way and give you a stipend as a well as a job later on.

Some states have rural care scholarships that pay your way and then some in exchange for service later on.

I still work, but most people wouldn't recommend it.

Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship. If you get it, they pay for up to 50k for graduate school. Pros: It's not one of those scholarships that cater to a particular ethnicity or type of school (i.e. Ivys). Cons: It's about 11 long long essays.

Not quite. Its year for year. For every year they pay for your tuition/supplies/stipend you owe them a year of service. Either before or after your residency.

ohhhh....yea, i just skimmed over the brochure and chucked it..

If interested in research, but not willing to sign up for MD/PhD, the NIH has a program that repays up to $35k + 39% (taxes) anually for two years if involved in a research-intensive fellowship after graduation. If you plan on specializing, this is a good thing to look into as it is on top of your salary and has an approximately 50% grant approval rate.

However, don't fret about the costs of medical school. Almost everyone takes out loans and there are all sorts of economic hardship deferrals and mandatory forbearances that allow you to hold off on loan repayment during your residency. When was the last time you heard of a broke doctor?

Work as a waiter at an expensive restaurant or hotel. Or, you could try bartending. This is if you want to work, of course. During slow nights, you can get some reading done.

People should also realize that a a significant portion of "educational debt" is cost of living. That being said, you would incur these costs in the "real world" anyway. That being said, accruing interest on the loan principal isn't cool...

Now here's an idea - an audience filled with medical students! Can't hurt to ask.

Between federal and private loans you can pretty much borrow however much you want. (Assuming no major credit history issues.) Private lenders in particular are happy to loan a ton to pre-professional students, albeit at higher interest than governmental program loans. But you obvoiusly don't want to borrow more than you need.

You could ***** yourself out to 500 fat chicks or 50 really fat chicks... what? fat chicks need love too... but they have to pay

I'm personally considering selling my eggs on the internet.

I know around here they'll pay 40k if you're Jewish, green eyes, and 1400+ SAT scores. Its been in the school paper ads for a while.👍

Yeah seriously. I've matched a couple in our paper that were paying like 50k. If it wasn't so risky I would probably do it.

Don't want to take out loans? Are you some how special, and different from all other medical students?

Anyways, you can make a good amount of money slinging rocks.

So far, all I am hearing on this thread are military/navy scholarships and different kinds of loans. I would like to hear more about scholarships.

To all of the former pre-med students out there that did manage to secure a scholarship( be it full ride or partial and no, not military/navy based):

1) How did you end up knowing about your scholarship?
2) Is there a website or something( Like Petersons) that can help you find "Graduate/Medical" school scholarships? Or is there a book that you recommend?
3) Let's say that you got accepted into the school of your choice but they gave you no aid( or not enough). How would you approach them in order to give you more aid? How would you write your letter?
4) What threads did you use, to find out which colleges are more prone to giving need based financial need? ( besides the school threads themselves).

loans…lol

Yes, I know . . .but there are other options . . .there are people who got in full ride or partial ride. I just want to know how it can be done.
Loans=NO( for now) . . .lol

Friends don't let friends necro posts. Start a new thread.

Also stripping is a totally viable option.
