Going through financial hardship and applying to dental schools is pretty expensive.

Borrowing money from family isn't an option for me. I plan applying around June2008. Anybody else had hard time? Are there loans or grants specifically for this purpose?

I JUST found out about "Fee Reduction" on AADSAS website but it says that I had to apply before Nov.2007. Bummer...

Please share! Thank you. 🙂

Apply is pretty tough for all of us. Especially when you have to travel hundreds of miles just to goto one interview. Plane/hotels aren't cheap.

I would work like crazy and save your money. Budget as best as you can, apply for any grants/scholarships you can.

My school has a grant/scholarship office that I talked with and I got a little help from them when I applied for one. I would suggest talking to them and they can probably tell you about any loans you can take out.

no joke...i was doing my taxes today and calculated about $3000 spent on DAT and Applying. If anything, start saving a lil now, if you can. I'd talk to anyone in your school's administration that you know well and find out whether there are any funds available.

I have spent over $6000 for DAT/APP/Interview, of that $1400 came from grant/scholarships, $1500 my parents loaned me, and the rest I have paid from savings/summer work. My wife is a stay at home mom so I have had to do this while going to school, SUCKS!

Point of my post - I shouldn't have applied to 19 schools! I quite possibly could have been more selective in my interviews. I am still paying my parents back, 0% interest.

The money we paid towards DAT, interviews, etc can be used as a tax deduction? If anyone knows anything about this please help out -- thanks!

I pretty much put everything on my credit card (aadsas accepts visa/mc). Kinda sucks, but I had no other option and am stressing about my debt now. Id like to enter dental school CC debt free.

I did the credit card thing as well but it was really my only option. Kinda crazy how much money these schools make on applicants. Schools like temple that g0t some 4000 applicants this cycle at 75 bucks a pop, pretty crazy...

Isn't Temple $25? Thats how much I paid and there were no probs with my application.

To the OP, I applied for an AMEX and found a job after to pay the bill off. You don't want your parents paying for it. Believe me, I thought of the consequences of not getting in this cycle- my parents would feel like it was money wasted... but then again, my parents didn't want me to be a dentist anyway so it had to come out of my own pocket.

So I might be wrong on fee reduction being expired for 2009 cycle.

First thing I am going to do is to submit all my paperwork for that...and if nothing works, I guess I have to use my credit card. :scared:

I got the Fee Reduction this cycle, but you have to pay the fees first and then submit the paperwork to get a refund after you've paid. Not sure why they think that people with limited funds would have them to begin with?

tell me about it. both me and my wife are going to dental school. just the application and interview process wiped us out. It's tough!

Temple was $30 this year, my cheapest supplemental app fee. I think Marquette came in second at $45.

I think the deadline for FRP was November 1, 2007. that's what it says on the AADSAS website in the Applying to Dental School info sheet.

I paid for it with savings b/c I took a year off after college to work. If I went straight from college, I figure I would use some of my undergrad loan money.
