Hello! Sorry for the long post!!
TLDR: MS1, have my life in order atm, want to start dreaming and working towards longer term career goals, but not sure how to do that / think about residency programs.
I'm an MS1- I realize I'm jumping the gun a little bit, but I really like setting goals and would like to plan for the future.
I'm really interested in psychiatry, have been for a few years, and I've started shadowing in the medical center affiliated with my school. I'm starting to explore research options- I've done a lot of wet lab in the past, and am interested in neurobiology/psychiatry research, and am considering applying into the MD-PhD program at my school.
I've been told it's good to find mentors and do research / get involved at places where you might want to go for residency, but I'm not sure how to do that.
I have ideas of where I'd want to go geographically, I want to do academic medicine, and have particular research interests already, but I'm not sure how to start thinking long term about residency programs or anything. I can talk more about that, if that could be helpful!!
Do you have any tips about how to decide where to start making connections, begin research projects or how to evaluate what residency programs I would maybe want to aim for?
Thanks for your insights!!
P.S. I have my coursework and study habits under control, I've been engaging with extracurriculars (a couple medical language-learning clubs, humanities/creative writing, and academic medicine club), hanging out with friends, and spending time with family!
