I'm starting an OT program this summer as I know many of you are (including this fall)...I know I'll be a slave to gross anatomy all summer (but I am def looking forward to it!!)...however, I wanted to start preparing now as I heard that the course is reallyyyyyyyyy a lot of work...I e-mailed an old professor of mine from Anatomy I and he told me to review bones/muscles/parts of them/etc...but I'm feeling like this isn't enough and I'm not exactly sure what they will cover. I tried googling a syllabus and I found a general outline but nothing specific. I was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions as to how to prepare for gross anatomy? I'm sure these will be beneficial for everyone starting an OT program soon. Thanks!

Hey, when I read this post I searched for this thread http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=746848 I found what MOTSTUDENT wrote was very helpful. I even bought the book "How to develop a super power memory"! (it should arrive in a week or two). I'm also a little nervous about Anatomy but I'm more worried about Kinesiology! I'm even taking a physics course at the moment to prepare, but so far the physics course is cake--Basic math & calculus. I think by review your old A&P books as well as your notes we will be fine.

I also found these youtube videos on intergrative biology REALLY helpful in regards to reviewing the material. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9WtBRNydso <--- first lecture.

I hope this helps! Any other tips would be greatly appreciated 😀

Hey all,

I'm not usually in this forum since I'm a PT student, but with all the craziness going on in some of the threads, and since I'm an asst mod for this forum, I've been lurking over here from time to time 😛

Anyway, this is a big topic over on the PT boards as well, because gross is definitely the most overwhelming class first year DPT students take. The vast majority of us who have gone through it agree - don't review too much before school:

First, you want to enjoy what free time you have left. I'm not sure how OT's first year compares to a PT's first year, but we're in class 40 hours/week from the get-go, so most of us want to take that last summer/spring to relax and mentally prepare ourselves.

Second, every professor teaches anatomy differently, meaning that what Prof. Smith at the PT/OT/Med school wants you to memorize as the origin/insertion will be slightly different than what Prof. Johnson wanted you to memorize in undergrad, or at a different PT/OT/med school. Therefore, spending a bunch of time memorizing those aren't a great idea.

However, if you do want to review a bit, focus on the big picture....become familiar with muscle names and where they are, the major things they do (again, some books/professors will say certain muscles might assist with abduction, others say they're purely flex, so only focus on the main actions that everyone agrees on). You could also learn the basics of the brachial plexus (and learn how to DRAW it, at least up through the branches...you'll need to be able to draw it on exams to trace it in lab and on written exams).

Good luck in school!

I completely agree. Don't go crazy over trying to prepare for anatomy. A & P is a good foundation, and you will be able to recall more than you think, but gross anatomy goes into a lot more depth than that and you will be spending plenty of time studying once you actually get there.

If you really want to start to familiarize yourself with some things though, the brachial plexus is a good suggestion. I would also add the lumbosacral plexus and the iliac arteries and branches, and the carotid arteries and branches.

But yeah, you'll be spending a lot of time studying once you actually get there, and it's easier to do that than to try and learn it all in advance because you will need to identify it in the lab and you will see the anatomical landmarks there.

This is unrelated to this particular thread but Thanks DancerFutureDPT & OT2BE2013!

Your posts helped me make a decision I have been debating for over a month. I was thinking of picking up a second job in may to earn a little more money before entering NYU. I haven't really taken time off from school/work since I started my college career so I wasn't sure if I should take a little vacation or just work right up to the end of august. Now I'm thinking of just working up to the first week of august and then taking the rest of those days to take a vacation. 🙂

Thank you too for all your help...I wanted to bounce off the last post and say I've been working for the last few months to try and scrap up my last few dollars before school starts. I was only going to take a week off before the program starts but I decided I am going to give myself 2 weeks. Even though I'll lose a little bit of money, its worth my sanity in the grand scheme of things 🙂 Thank you!

Penguinita, I think that's a fantastic idea. Personally, I worked full-time right up until the start of the program and continued to work during weekends for the first few months... that will burn a gal out fast 😱 Take that vacation! Congrats on getting into NYU, that's wonderful.

Yeah, the money situation is rough for most of my class right now, but we're all so happy to be doing what we're doing, it's not so bad. It's all going to be worth it.

Glad you guys are benefiting from reading this board. Next year, you guys will be the ones giving incoming students advice 👍
