How to prepare for Ob/Gyn interview

hi. I am 'so-so' med student getting ready for interviews for ob/gyn programs. I am happy to say that I alreay got 3 interviews, and thankfully, one of them is one of my top choice.
I am trying to figure out how I should prepare for the interview. Is there any questions that I should ask, is there specifc questions that they are going to ask me.. Any help would be greatly appreciated😀

First have a list of questions about the program ready.
Second get a book like Eriksons preparing for the medical interview know questions like what is your biggest weakness, how do you feel about abortion, how do you handle stress, what is the best or worst OB/Gyn experience and how did you deal with it, why OB/Gyn? Are you interested in research? How would you handle a disgruntled patient. How do you know Ob/Gyn is right for you (hopefully you have done a sub-i or volunteered in the field).


Second research the school know what Dr's do what and use pubmed to figure out research interest by inputting author name and school. Ask when the last accredidation was were there any violations. Has there been any program turnover why how are they planning to resolve this? Are there social functions resident retreats. What is the level of faculty support? ie do they assign advisors what is their teaching/ didatics like. Lastly how expereince are graduates in laproscopic surgery or vaginal surgery ( the program should graduate at least 30 vag hysts).

I used notecards to help remember specifics.

When I'm interviewing applicants, I look mostly at their personality and honesty. From a resident perspective, we want to see you fit in with us.

In terms of preparation, approach it in two ways: for interviews with residents just be yourself and show off your true personality. For interview with attendings, look at the program's website the night before and get an idea of where they come from and what their interests are... My trick has always been to pick up on something in the office and start talking about that. At the end, if they've done more of the talking they get the sense that it was a complete and worthwhile interview.

As for resources, there are several good ones out there... I prefer Iserson's Guide to getting into residency.

I have a question - is everyone getting itineraries of their days before going on the interview? I asked the program coordinator of my first interview, and she said that the itinerary would be available on the day of the interview. So that makes it tough to look up the interviewers before the interview! What has everyone's experiences been in this department?

Not all the programs have given me the itineraries before the interview day. Sometimes you don't have the advantage of knowing who you're going to interview with until that day.

On the other hand, sometimes they'll tell you in advance...but be careful...things change on interview day (people getting called into the OR) and you may end up with someone completely different who you weren't prepared for...then you just have to show off your glowing personality 😀

About the interview questions....I found that the best way to prepare is to have YOUR questions ready for your interviewer. Sometimes they're very first question for you is "What are your questions for me?" and it shows your interest in the program when you have lots of questions.

I totally agree . . . I had 2 interviewers on Friday who only wanted to answer my questions, and didn't ask me any of their own. So be prepared to do all the talking, just in case!

And remember, your second interviewer has no idea what questions you asked of the first guy, so if you're stumped, ask the same things (the different answers could be enlightening anyway!)

I know they're not supposed to hit on our political views during interviews, but just a heads up about recent election results in South Dakota . . . they had a vote about a ban on abortion . . . it was really close (56-44%) but the people voted no. Just thought I'd bring it up, in case it came up on an interview (or maybe in conversation at the resident dinner)!
