How to prepare in High School

Honestly, take it easy and take fun classes and have a good childhood. Aim for a high sat and a high high school gpa. Maybe take a few ap classes.

Hello,
What are some common/uncommon and effective ways to prepare for a career in health care while still in high school?

Well, nothing on your high school resume/transcript appears on med school apps (maybe a few rare exceptions).

If you mean life experience to prepare - you could start to learn about why YOU want to go into healthcare. Test the waters if you are seriously motivated. Many hospitals have volunteer programs although it may be limited for minors. Find other activities you are passionate about or excite you. It can be clubs, sports, performing arts, etc. These don't have to be healthcare related. Just be a balanced person.

Maybe see if a doc will let you shadow for a bit. Like others have said, nothing from high school can be put on an application to med school. My high school had a "health professions" class where it was basically just shadow someone new every few weeks. Try to find out "why" or even "if" you want to pursue medicine.

Enjoy high school and do well so you can go to the college you want to attend.

The most relevant thing you might want to do is shadow a doctor, or anything that could give you a feel for what the job is like.. Just maybe a day or two, maximum. The point behind it is to get a sense if this is really what you want to devote 11 or 12 years after you graduate high school to pursuing.

Enjoy being a teenager, join clubs, sports, EC's, hang out with friends, date and if you are really passionate make sure study, writing, and reading skills are good 🙂
