Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone went through the whole ordeal of buying a place before medical school? Especially in a location far from where you live?

If so, I was wondering

-How did you do your market research for the area?

-Did you use a real estate broker? If so, how did you find him or her?

-How far away did you end up getting a place from your respective medical school?

I'm seriously considering buying a one bedroom apartment or something but am having a tough time doing my research. Any help would be well appreciated. Thanks.

Well, typically what I like to do is get into good favor with the dean and get him/her out for lunch. Then, while eating, I suggest leaving a plain white envelop (with 2000-10000 depending on the school) in front of the dean and looking the other direction. If this doesn't work please let me know.

I know some people who bought a condo or a house, which might be a bit different to what you are looking for, but I think it would be best to just look for advertisements of places available, check out the places, ask questions, and find out the asking price. You'll get a good idea of the prices in the area after looking at a lot of places. It's usually negotiable too. People get places 5-10 minutes from school, but I go to a school in a small town so I'm not sure if it would be feasible in your area. It's best if you could make a trip to the area and check places out, because otherwise you wouldn't know what you're happy with. I don't know why you'd want to use a real estate broker because you can just look at listings online or drive through developments you're interested in.

I used www.rent.com, found a few places that looked good and were pretty close, about 5 miles. I asked a freind who lived in the area to check them out for me and picked the one that he thought was best.

I bought my house and I really am glad I did. Now, in my summer break I am working on the yard and getting ready to make some renovations and updates. 🙂

I bought it on a 'stated income' mortgage and I was lucky to have a savvy mortgage loan officer. She was great! I chose a neighborhood near school and I talked to alot of people so I could get a good sense of what was what. Then, after looking at about 20 houses I found one I liked - it has charm and was a fixer-upper.

So, talk to people, read the newspaper and just start driving around and talking to real estate brokers and people who are selling their homes.

My wife and I plan to buy this winter. In the meantime, we're taking a six-month lease in order for our affairs in Virginia to be settled and for us to get to know Madison better, to be sure of where we want to buy. I think that doing the same would resolve many of the concerns you have. It'll mean moving *again* in six months, but mean a much lower chance of buying something you won't be happy with.

We're going to use a broker because we are not real estate experts and don't know all the questions to ask. Besides, it costs nothing to use one.
