Hi
I had to retake Orgo because I was doing very poorly the first time, so I took a W. I didn't think the material was *that* hard, I just found that I wasn't studying for it correctly. I got closer to doing better and better every time , and now I feel like I can do well. I'm just asking, how to relieve the anxiety of taking it again?

Like, I've been studying everyday and I feel like I can do really well on the first quiz, but how do I calm myself down and know that things will be different this time, last time was a fluke?

Like, I would expect I got at least a 70 on something, then I'd get like, a 50. How do I tell myself I'm doing things right now, so I'll do well now. The quiz isn't until next week, but I'd like some feed back please.

The more practice you do, the more confident you'll be

Have you learned how to study correctly? If so, you'll do a lot better this time around, easily boosting from 50s to 70s!

Welll...hopefully this time I'll have 90's that was just one example where I thought I would at least improve slightly

*Bumping because my first orgo test is this Thursday guys please help*

I was in your same situation and was very nervous knowing if I did not do well again it was likely the end of my road. I found it much easier the second time though, especially the first test. 60 the first time, 95 the second time, same prof.

Aaaahhhhh thank you!

Definitely agree with this.

Ochem is about practice. Practice so much that when you see it on the test you aren't even anxious at all, because you will have already done a similar problem. If you are still struggling through problems, getting stuck, ending up with the wrong answer then you aren't done practicing 😉

I kind of have a reverse story. I studied as much as I could for my first Orgo II test and made 100, which I was obviously very surprised by. Unfortunately, I took that 100 and started thinking I was an orgo natural, and that I didn't need to study that much. Ended up with an 83 on the next exam, and a 65 on the one after that. Thankfully I was able to get my ego in check and get back to studying, and made As on the final two exams.

Long story short: practice and studying are the key. If you aren't making the grades you want, it just means you didn't put in the time that YOU need. Everyone is different, and you have to figure out which study habits work best for you.

^ I do feel like I'm getting it, but every time last semester, I was surprised by how bad my grade was. I just really don't want the same nasty shock this time D:

OP I had to retake Ochem 2, and although I worked my butt off I felt like it came easier the second time around and I ended up doing pretty well. Just practice like crazy and work on asking yourself why the mechanisms work the way they do.

Have you checked out Leah4Sci at all? As the poster above said actually understanding the mechanism is key. This is what allows you to apply what you learn in practice problems to exams. The thing about orgo is the problems on the exams are presented in a way you may not have seen before. But, if you understand mechanism then it's not an issue.

Her videos on alkene and alkyne reactions are awesome. They go through the chemistry of what is happening and are really quick and straightforward. They provided me with a really good foundation for the rest of the semester and gave me the confidence I needed on exams.

Okay you guys, exam got moved to tmrw morning due to weather, wish me luck!

Everyone says that orgo is about practice, and practice really does help you learn to recognize patterns in reactions and increase your speed. But for me at least, studying for orgo also involved a lot of pure memorization. You really have to first spend time etching into your brain what all of the common functional groups, compounds, reactions, etc. look like... and only then go forward and start practice problems.

That's what I did this time. Although just a question for ya'll who may remember
When a compound has a formula C7H8O
There are both aromatic and NON-aromatic possibilities, right? Because for those degrees of unsaturation you can do a ring or no ring.
( Friend and I were debating this)
