How to show you are interested in working with the underserved?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
As someone who likes to believe they are committed to the underserved,
>reading and literacy programs for children in educationally underserved school districts
>free healthcare clinics in rural areas
>volunteering in homeless shelters/food banks/soup kitchens
>research in public health disciplines-- health disparities affecting different demographics, etc.
>general community outreach, i participate in a food bank-esque program that only lets you get food after you've gone outside and had your blood pressure taken, did a lap around the basketball courts, and spent a few minutes allowing me to preach to you about the importance of preventative care 😉

I conducted research with a centre which is dedicated to health disparities. Also volunteered in programs centered around minority health. There are definitely opportunities out there which are different than the typical premed experiences, but these are really valuable in pursuing your interest of helping underserved populations and are worth finding.

For me, I worked in a free clinic. But, when I say worked, I wasn't just a random premed volunteer. I took time to get to know our patients, their names, their health issues. Of course, I could never repeat any of it, but it really increased my ability to empathize with them. I'd suggest just getting to know them, as people.

For me, I did a lot of medical mission work. A local church that I work with also has a lot of programs reaching out to under-served people that I participated in.

Why are we making this about politics? How you vote has no bearing on your application. Political activism is not the same as directly serving others, no matter what you believe.

Go out into the community and work with the underserved in any setting you like - clinics, shelters, soup kitchens, etc. But do it because you want to help others, and not because you're "checking off another box."
