Hi.

I am a sophomore in college...a predental.
I was wondering if dental students could give me advice about how to spend summer.
Is it better to do a research project with faculty or volunteer at hospital?
I am definitely shadowing a dentist. But I have time to do another task...but I can't decide between volunteer or research.
I would appreciate any input.

Take your anatomy course at your local med school (the head and neck part) you will greatly relieve a brutal first year. Or earn lots of money and throw it at school loans RL

If u already took anatomy, review biochem and histo will help also

Above studying...I urge you to work for a dental laboratory for free. It's the best way to get ready for dental school. I worked with wax, stone, porcelain, gold, implants, and a lot of other things. So many of my classes were lab classes and I did very well in them because I knew had lab skills. And because these lab classes were a lot of units, they helped me with my GPA tremendously.

I TA'ed in undergrad (O-chem, bio, & anatomy) but in all honesty, you relearn everything in dental school....I value my time in the lab more than any didactic work I did in undergrad. Except biochem 😉

how do you work in a dental laboratory for free?
do you mean to say that we can actually sit-in dental lab classes during the summer?

You can sit in- instructor permission first- OR ask a dentist who does lab work to watch- OR perhps some dental lab who wants you as a future customer will let you on and observe. There's a whole host of opportunities...take advantage of them!
