I am having trouble focusing while trying to study biology. I've been reading and reading, but at the end of the sections, I feel as though I don't retain to much. Does anybody have any ideas of how to read the sections and retain? I am assuming I am passively reading, so what did everybody do to read and understand?

Thanks!

since you have taken bio long time ago, then, i would suggest you go over kaplan questions, know where your weaknesses are, then review other materials like topscore, achiever, examkrackers... by my experiences, i will get bored after reading those texts.

reviewing your questions over and over again, then you will get used to those questions during exam. also, avoid repeating your mistakes.

you can apply such methods on gchem, ochem.

hope this is helpful

go through kap schaums and ek and make a chapter of notes for each topic in a book. then go through all the questions in topscore achiever kaplan tests etc and write down the questions that you get wrong in that book along with explanations of right and wrong answers. make flashcards for processes that you have a hard time memorizing. read, reread, and reread until everything in that book is like second nature to you.

and then repeat. good luck!

The best way to study that works for me is: You break up the studying into lessons or topics. After you finish each topic you do a bunch of questions on it to reinforce the knowledge. Whenever I am just reading i cannot remember what I`ve read. i need to do some questions just to make sure I really know it.
Try it, I believe it will help you. Good luck.

Maybe try taking notes in your own words once you've read the material a couple times. Make flashcards of important concepts you come across. The previous posters hit the best solution though: DO PRACTICE PROBLEMS to reinforce what you read.

I just finished making about 1000 flashcards from the Kaplan book. I separated them each by chapter and take a few "bundles" with me each time I study (or on my commute to work). I found that once I finished making the flashcards, I only needed to go through them once or twice to retain the info. If you're not a big flashcard person, I think creating outlines would also work! Writing down the info definitely helps though- much better than just reading in my opinion.
