There are some oldish threads about pharm resources, but nothing really up to date. So what are people's thoughts on how to study pharm for 2nd year class (not boards)? My school uses the Katzung text. I see some old threads suggesting Pharmacology Recall, but it's a number of years old with no new edition. And there seem to be a variety of opinions on the Lippincott pharm.
I'm trying to budget for books for the upcoming year, and I've found plenty of helpful advice on pathology but not as much on pharm. (I haven't even looked for micro yet...)
Problem with pharm is often you need to pay attention to what your instructors think is important or are talking about because those are the questions they will submit.
I didn't like playing the guess what my instructor is thinning game. So I paid attention to old tests and used pharmcards, going over them again and again and again. If you pay extra attention to antibiotics, it will also net you points on micro as well, especially for the parasitic infections.
I have yet to find a good pharm book. The best I've seen is lippincotts (sp?) pharm review. It's not a small review book, but it ties pharm and phys together and has pretty good pictures.
Thanks. We don't have access to old tests, but I will definitely be getting pharm cards. Maybe I will hold out and see if the cards and lecture notes are enough.
Class: memorize a list of drugs condensed into one line of MOA, Side Effects, and Rx
Step 1: Raymon's pharm lectures. My Step 1 exam had a lot of MOA questions and ADRs. It really just comes down to brute force memorization for names/classes/effects but understanding how does help in some cases (like how benzos, barbs differentially affect the GABA receptor, how digoxin works). Also a good tip is to understand WHY the side effect occurs (ESPECIALLY for renal drugs!).
