Hi,
I will be an incoming D1 this fall and I am curious if there will be anytime in Dental School for "extra curricular" activity? Do you guys think that extra curricular is important? is it worth risking a lower grade over it?

My plan is to get a 100% guarantee spot in a top brand name hospital for general dentistry residency. (not sure if I want to specialize, so I will just keep it at that). So what else do I need to do if I want to secure this?

I don't think you can... Work hard and you will have a pretty good shot. Also, what do you mean by a "brand name" GPR?? Just curious.

Hospital like John Hopkins, Columbia's Prebyterain, etc. who offers GPRs.

Also by working hard, you only mean academically?

Well, I would be careful with how you pick your GPR if you decide to go that path, especialy if you have not even started clinical yet. From what I understand there really is no such thing as a "name brand" GPR. I could be wrong though. I do not mean just academically - you must do well academically as well as show that you are a fairly well rounded person. Its no different than applying to dental school really, you just have a more refined applicant pool. 👍

Just because their undergraduate and medical schools are great doesn't mean their general practice residency of their dentistry department is any good.

But you can use their name to advertise ;-). Since gpr are paid so wouldnt it be better to go for the name? For dental school I understand that name doesnt matter but it still helps alittle to get some patient that are shopping around. So why not use the opportunity to use the gpr's hospital name to advertise yourself?

Meh...Just be a baller and you won't need the name 😎

I guess if you just want the name association then go ahead with the brand name hospital. Just remember that their dentistry department is separate from their prestigious medical side.

On a related note, most patients choose their dentist by word-of-mouth. The few patients who do choose patients by brand name aren't going to make up the extra $300,000 that'll cost you go to one of these private schools.

dont worry, I am going for my state school 🙂. Since all GPR(not sure) are paid so there is really no financial cost (unlike dental school) so why not use this opportunity to "brand" yourself. Unless GPR logic is the same as dental school, choose the best paying one?!?!!

Because you could use the opportunity to go to a GPR that will better fit what you want to do, what you want to learn, and compliment your competencies and incompentencies and thus allow you to leave a better clinician, whose clinical skills will speak for themselves in terms of referrals.

There are about two hundered things patients will consider in choosing a practice before what school or residency the clinician went to comes into play.

When its time, pick the best residency for you.

Until then, communicating well with professors, time management, and efficiency are the keys for taking care of business during the didactic portion of dental school. IMO.

Go for it!! You should work hard during dental school. You will have time
for light extra curricular activities, especially during your short summer breaks.
You should do a GPR! So why not try it with an Ivy League program.
I went to a state school for dental, then did a GPR at Harvard. Believe me, my classmates who did AEGD at our dental school did 10x more dentistry than me at Harvard (I did more hospital consults than anything)
But in my experience, having that name on my CV did give me more advantages when I applied for work. You will also meet alumni (not necessarily from the Dental dept., but from hte general Ivy League name) along the line who would prefer you over your
competition.

There is time to do extra-curriculars, but it depends on how hard you are willing to work.
Don't do extracurriculars because you think it'll help you in getting into a residency - do it because you want to, or you think you'll have fun. Like someone else said above, it's about being a well-rounded person. If you have 3 kids, and do well in dental school - that is way more than enough! If you are single, and do well in Dental school - I hope you can make time for something else - be it playing an instrument, being involved in a religious organization, volunteering, etc.
