Hi everyone,

I have a question for licensing as a dental specialist. I've been practicing dentistry for a few years and have my dental license as a general dentist. If I were to specialize in peds, endo, etc do I need to apply for a new specialist license? OR keep current license and update the title?

Depends on your state.

Thank you. I’ve been trying to look for this information online but I wasn’t able to find it. Would you happen to know where I could find this information? Or know which states don’t require a new license?

You have to go to the state board of dentistry in the state you are interested in and see the licensing requirements there. Off hand, NY has one dental license for everyone. Across the river in New Jersey, everyone needs a dental license and specialists have to get a specialty permit to advertise as specialists. The specialty permit is not a new license, it's in addition to the dental license. Across the river again in Delaware, it is one license for everyone.
