How to Thank Your Recommendation Letter-Writers

On the topic of getting trashed, one of my (pre-tenure) professors in grad school would throw parties, invite the half of the department she liked, and get absolutely wasted. When she left (got an offer from a top department, with tenure), the department head commented that "we're losing our expert in [area]... and the person who knows how to throw really fun parties."
