I am currently a 3rd year Osteopathic student...and the more and more I am out on rotations and learn about how things work...I am more and more confused about what to do...
I was originally going to do a few DO uro rotations at the begininng of 4th year, as I hear that is the best time to rotate throught programs that you are interested in...as they will hopefully interview you while you are rotating.
I now learned that there are maybe one or two "linked" D.O. uro programs in the country...so we apply through general surg...and then apply to uro after internship and 1yr of general surg...the catch 22 seems to be that general surg programs won't touch you if they know you want to leave..to go do urology....
I am unsure how to proceede and how to even go about doing things anymore...I am going to do a uro this year..and some urology research and hopefully get published this spring..but I am not sure how this process works...

I am confused and frustrated...and have no idea where to seek out answers...

So...for people that have been through this...or are going through this...

I'd love to get some advice...or a head's up...

I know it is really competitive....so I don't want to make any costly or stupid mistakes....

hey bro i also have been thinking about Uro as well. what places are you thinking about applying to in the future as well as where would you like to your subI? Ive heard in our realm there are not many uro residencies so we have to go allopathic for the most part.
since you have taken step1 and maybe step2 what do you need as far as a good score to have a good shot and getting in..i really dont know as of yet..

I am still waiting on replies myself...I will let you know as I hear...

www.urologymatch.com -- tells you everything you were asking about.

For DO's, or IMG's of any kind, research is -- in my humble opinion -- a requirement. That's a lot of what I talk about on my interviews.

Hope that helps.

If some one doesnt match into urology, are there any other ways of getting a spot? Like doing cat or prelim surgery and then reapplying? if that is the case do you have to apply as a PGY1 all over again or is the surgical year you completed considered mart of the general surgery portion of the residency?

Thanks

I have heard of people getting into Urology this way. The important thing is to not even MENTION the fact that you are interested in Urology during your GS interviews. A GS program won't even consider you if they know they aren't going to have you for all 5 years.

I agree with "bustinbooty"..I have heard that from several people...for those exact reasons...

By the way...I just flew out of Detroit....I have left 8 mile for NYC!
