how do u know if u should set the frequencies equal to p or p2.....same with q

because sometimes in destroyer the frequency will be set at p ad solve the answer from there....but other times, he would set it equal to p2 and then take the square root
 
P2 + 2pq + q2 = 1
P + q = 1
P2 = frequency of homozygous dominants
2pq = frequency of heterozygotes
q2 = frequency of homozygous recessive
p = frequency of dominant allele
q = frequency of recessive allele
use P2 when they tell you how many individuals are AA for instance and use p when they tell you how frequently the dominant allele occurs in the population.
