I'm traveling this Spring Break and would like to visit medical schools in the area. What's the best way to do it? Call in advance and schedule and an appointment? Just show up? Meet with someone from the admissions office? Just wondering if one you guys have done it and what you've done to make arrangements. Thanks in advance!

I wanted to visit a local school and meet with the admissions department prior to completing my last prerequisites so I could do what may be needed to increase my chances. I e-mailed the admissions director, he replied and I went to meet with him and had an informal walk around the school. He was not able to accompany me and school was on break so I essentially saw hallways and the library. So just keep in mind that they are very harried right now and may even be on break. Just start with an e-mail.

Hi there,
Contact the admissions office to see if there is a formal pre-application tour or set-up. You may be surprised to find that many schools have programs for the pre-applicant but you need to make arrangements.

It is good to visit while students are there. Ask them questions and find out why they like and chose this school. Ask them about their preparation and application. Most people are willing to give you plenty of information about their school.

The best case scenario is that you get to meet with someone from the admissions office that remembers you when you submit your competitive application. The worst case scenario is that you do your own tour but find out lots of things from students who are there. Either way, you really cannot lose. If nothing else, you have something to discuss right off the bat when you go for the interview.
