Right now I am interested in NYCPM, Temple, and Rosiland Franklin.

I have a 3.08 GPA in Biochemistry and Molecular biology. Graduated in 2003. Worked 2 years as a research associate doing gene therapy research, 1 year as a research coordinator at a leading hospital, 4 years of undergrad research.

GRE- V:490, Q:700, A:5.5

Have not taken the GRE subject test or MCAT

I was wondering if its worth applying to these schools and if I have a shot? Also, should I take the MCAT to try to improve my chances?

NYCPM requires the MCAT or DAT sometimes they take the GRE subject test. They will almost never accept only the GRE.

From your GPA and research experience it looks good. Have you published anything? If so definitely talk about it.

Your profile sounds competitive. I would definitely apply. Not sure about the GRE though (I have no idea how that scale works). Rosalind Franklin requires the MCAT but will accept GRE scores on a case by case basis. The MCAT is pretty grueling to prepare for. If your GRE is decent by most standards (and like I said, I wouldn't know if it is or not) I would just apply with that. PM me if you have any questions about Rosalind Franklin specifically. Good luck 🙂

Hey,
I'm a Temple Student and I can tell you right now that it is VERY competitive to get in. They had turn down about 26% of the applicants for the class of 2009. Your G.P.A looks good, but I'm not sure about the GRE. Did you take the MCATs? TUSPM will accept either. I would definitely say to make sure you have excellent references, great essay and remain cool/calm for the interview. As far as the best Pod school, not to be biased, but it's definitely Temple. We have everything here; we're also one of the largest and most diverse. Plus we're right in the middle of Philadelphia, which means you see AMAZING cases. The Chicago school and Ohio school are very good too. Good luck to you and lemme know if you have any questions!

Whao! Hold on there. What about Des Moines University? You cant forget the school with the highest acedemic statistics, (part 1 and 2 board scores). Hands down DMU has led the nation in the highest 1st try board pass rate for the past at least 5 years. As far as I know DMU is the only program that has all the basic science courses fully integrated with DO medical students. Same classes, same tests. Im just sayin, it may be Iowa but dont put all your eggs in one basket. Explore all the options before committing. Im sure DiabeticFootDr can attest.

Des Moines University's first try pass rate on the boards is 30 percent above the national average. The national average is in the high 60's and DMU"S this year was, I think 97 percent.

correction...Boards Part I national pass rate this year (2005) was 83%. 1st try pass rates are good to consider while looking at schools, but if you are going to start talking statistics you need to consider the amount of students taking the boards (i.e. NYCPM will have 100 +, Des Moines would have ~ 30) so averages vary. I would highly recommend Des Moines as well as Scholl College and Temple not to say other schools are not good...those are just my favorites. I have lots of interaction w/ students from all the schools...just my 2 cents

Just to give you guys a little perspective temple flew out the DMU dean to review their curriculum last year. And if you want to talk statistically 1 out of 30 DMU students did not pass the 1st part boards, so that would mean that "statistically" that NYCPM should have had about only 3.3 students not pass it. Right? Well that didn't happen did it. Stats. should be similar don't you think and there should not be such a large discrepancy in board scores holding all things equal. The facts are the facts. We are just trying to inform you guys. DMU has one of the best if not the best cirriculums of all the podiatric schools. Success is Contagious!
