So I'll be applying to DS in 2 years but I can see some roadblocks in my future that I think will weaken my application:

1) I'm a community college transfer
2) I plan on taking an extra semester to graduate
3) I don't plan on doing any research
4) I'm taking 1 DS prereq each semester
5) I'm a psychology major
6) I took a year of chem at my CC

some other pertinent information is: I have a 3.8 from CC and 70 units, I transferred to UC Berkeley, I interned at UCSF in an administrative position last summer, and I shadowed for ~50 hrs

Am I over thinking these things or are they significant pitfalls that could prevent me from getting accepted to dental school?

Doesn't matter what your extra stuff looks like as long as you keep that 3.8 GPA and get a 20 on the DAT. Although doing one extracurricular activity wouldn't kill you now would it?

You actually plan to avoid doing things that will help your chances to getting in (research).

i don't plan to avoid doing research or anything else that will strengthen my application but from my past experience i know that if I work during the semester my grades will suffer

Do it in the summer. There are lots of internships offered then.

I am a transfer student from a CC. I think I'm at a disadvantage compared to students in a 4yr college/university. I think you should do some sort of internship or research. Like doc3232 said do it during the summer or even during the winter session. Good Luck.

FYI most schools require prereqs to be done at a 4 year college. So if you didn't take chem at a 4 year you will be automatically shot down. Also you have a couple years until you graduate work in a dental office 10 hours a week. shadow different doctors (perio, pedo, ortho, maxiofacial surger...) Dental school is about 25 credit hours a semester so if you struggle with 12 credit hours you are in for a huge shock. Take a lot of upper division science classes:biochem 1 and 2, anatomy, micro, macro, physiology, histiology, imunology, those will all show you can do well in tough science classes and will help with your D1 year. Hope this helps🙂

thank you it does

As far as being rejected from most schools based on my chem series at CC..from the research I've done there are only a handful of schools that will not accept cc credit. My only concern is that will my GPA be tainted because it was from CC.

A little bit. I think schools will recognize it is easier but you will have a good gpa in the university to show you are capable.

I am in a similar situation. However, after I transferred to a 4 year university my GPA actually increased from 3.7 to about 3.9 . I took the inorganic chems at CC, but the orgos in the university.

I have been rejected from all the research positions I applied to(I anticipate because of being a transfer student....)🙁

I will *waste* the next 1-2 years doing extracurriculars just to increase my chances.

that sucks...why do you think you were rejected from research positions because you were a transfer?
