Hey Folks,

Any body who gave part 2 on Dec 1st and 2nd please post ur experience about the exam...which part was difficult and which need more stress..I heard from my friend that the paper was tough....

I haven't taken Part 2 yet, planning to take it in march.

I had part 2 taken and I think it was pretty hard.........especially statistics questions on first day...on the 2-nd day 8 patient cases it was hard too.

Just took Part II on Monday.

If I had to take this test again, I would make sure I'd know some of the following topics really well for the Pharm section. Antibiotic premed scenarios (adults & children, esp medically compromised); everything about prescribing and using analgesics (narcortics & non-narcotics), benzodiazepines, and barbituates; steroid therapy; meds for heart conditions like angina, congestive heart failure, arrhytmia, etc; antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals - know some basics & mechanisms. The questions weren't quite as complicated sounding as the ones on the old exams with the Pharmacology sections of 100 questions each.

The case studies just got tiring.

I definitely saw a number of repeats, either repeats of exact questions or concepts from the questions- so study the old exams. I only looked at the exams released in the 1980s and 1990s because I ran out of time.

The dental decks are definitely a very good review and I would try to get through them at least twice. But not everything on the exam can be found on the decks, so I would review some class notes if you have time. I don't think it was that comprehensive for the Behavioral Science/Psychology questions, however I don't have any suggestions of what you could study for that section. I just went with the answer that sounded best.

Hi everyone,

I was taking a break from anything related to dentistry. I am glad I am done with part2. Hopefully, I did just fine.

For me, as expected Pharmacology was pretty hard. It is very important to remember Neurology, especially the simpathetic system action. Lots of questions about cardiac stimulation and CNS depression, pre medication, arrythmia, blood tests used for certain types of drugs. All the topics that griffin04 suggest, are very important. I believe that it is better to find a good reference book about it. I did not have much time for it, but I could not find all the answers on Decks or Kaplan book (they are good, but not enough). I do not have any school notes, but if you do or know someone who has them, can be a good help.
For prosthodontics, know a lot of vertical dimension, balacing, occlusion. But the questions were ok.
Pathology, please look as much as pictures as possible and make sure that you know by heart all the clinical manifestions of the diseases and place where they develop. Compare radiograph. of normal and abnormal structures.
Behavioral Science, was something something (as we say in Brazil), all I did was guess, most of them. I also do not know any book about it, but it is good if you can at least read something.

The cases, was kind of tiring, I agree, but not bad.

Some questions were unclear, weird and some just made me confused, but...

If I have to retake, I will definetely will find a pharmacology book and will concetratate more on the old exams. Decks and Kaplan are also excelent help.

Anyway. I took my test at the UCLA and I heard from some students that the test was not easy as they thought would be. So I am kind of relieved that was not just me.

i also found it hard,,,i will say more confusing.in 30% of questions ,,i ended up in 2 possible answers,,so difficult to decide which one is more appropriate..lets see..the score will tell ...😉

If one takes it on paper, isnt that an advantage in terms of how a curve will affect our grades. I mean, I assume most regular class DDS will take it on paper, so they'll add up to the ADA curve on the score, won't they?

there is a thread called Part2 where I mentioned all the material that I used. The thread was not a sucess because people who were taking the exam did not colaborate with ideas. But you can check what I did. Maybe someone will post something extra. Make sure you post yours as well, any info can make a huge difference.

Congrats in advance, Im sure all that hard work will pay off! 🙂 Last week I just woke up from my post part 1 slumber.. I'll be giving the exam in march.. any advice on where to begin?? Decks Kaplan notes or text books, taking into acct tht i just have 3 months to go? 😕

A lot of ppl have been asking for a good Pharmacology text book.. Several Part 2 veterans have recomended that i use Lippincotts Illustrated Pharmacology Review.. I find it interesting and a good supplement to the decks, but then again i just started last week, so I don't know how well it works for all pharmac topics. I used the Lippincott Biochem book for part 1, and that helped me a lot.. all those cute illustrations really stick in your mind! 😀 ----> do i put this in your part 2 thread, chuchuca?

Paper based vs computerised..
Huge ongoing debate.. but where the curve is concerned, i think u have a definite advantage with paper based, given the vast numbers of students who opt for that test. Its what I'll be taking, thats for sure.

Hi everybody,
I have given my part 2 recently and thought the second day (CASE STUDY QUESTIONS) was really tough. First day was'nt great either but relatively okay. Second day I felt like I knew may be 25 Questions out of 100. rest all were guesses.
Iam interested in knowing if any body can hlep me by telling the general trend, i mean any idea how many do you need to get right to pass, or just to touch 80. is there anybody else who felt like me and cleared!!!

I have studied for Part 2 for 8 weeks intensively.......12-14 hours a day every day for 8 weeks with a couple exceptions, I used the Dental Decks and the ASDA Released Examinations and that's all.
I went thru Dental Decks 4 times and the Asda papers 2 times each day reading 150-200 cards.
Pharmacology is pretty tuff so make sure you know by heart especially medications in which group do they belong and what are the major side effects and their route of action on target cells.

hi, i m asking the same old question. whoever took part 2 can help me what u guys think is easier? written or computerbased part 2? and yeah for computerbased i have the main question in mind that can we go back to the questions once we have answered or its just done?
and yeah are we suppose to answer the question at a time and without anwering can we go to the next question and then come back to the question when we want to?
i m curious about these things becuase prometric whict conducts computerised part 2 also conducts toefl and in toefl we can not go back to the questions once we answer and without answering we cant move to the next question even though its possible in written toelf .
i hope someone can help me out with this problem.

i took my nbde-2 recently & i think u shd not worry abt going back to questions...or what if u leave some unanswered questions..
see u r given enough time,,,u can go back to question any time,,infact they have good system,,,one can mark the question if he feel doubt abt it & can also leave it without answering...at last u will see the list of marked & unanswered questions,,,& u can select answers..
dont worry,,,just prepare well for the exam.

Hi smi,

answering your questions would be easy of you buy The Tutorial form ADA. Check on the website. It costs $10 and show you, how to take the test on the computer. In my opinion it would make you feel more secure.

About the computers being easier than the written, that's a myth. The questions have the same format. I know because my friend took the computer one week before I took the written. The only advantage, it is that he already received his results ( in 2 weeks).

About the scoring this is the information that I got it from another members :

"Part I is graded on a curve but Part II is graded by "a standard setting committee determines the score scale by means of a criterion-referenced method. although conversion scales are established in terms of reference group performance, those conversion scales, once established, are uniformly applied."

"Part 2 is not like part 1. all questions are mixed up ,and you can not find a seperate section for all subjects .in computer test, it is a two day exam, and you have a plenty of time to take test

the breakdown by part 2 subject area is just for your information
and they are not going to send them to dental schools or board.

on part 2 result you have 3 different scores
1)higher than national average H
2)at the national average A
3)lower than national average L"

In part 1 that group is made up by first time takers who are students of regular DDS classes in ADA aproved schools.
I'll think for part 2 they'll take the same reference group.

i had taken my cbtpart2. many peopl i know hav found the first papers relatively easier than the second day,but again it really depends on the question pool u get.my first day questions were quite vague and tough......especially prostho,perio,behavioral sciences...hardly any questions were repeated frm the old question papers, case based questions were relatively easier
i think it really depends on the question paper u get tht particular.
tht s wht makes cbt very scary

I dont know how many of you are doing the CBT, coz I have decided to do it..I am not ready for march or april one yet ...I am guilty of have no feeling to read and study anything. NBD 1 drained all my mental capacity..
