Hello, I am an American planning to study Dentistry in (you guessed it!) America. I am not the biggest fan of the country, however, and there is a very good chance I will not spend the rest of my life here. Is it possible to make use of an American dental degree abroad? I know Canada is OK but what about the rest of the world? THANKS!

Kudos for leaving instead of trying to fix it. But I don't think there are many places that will honor a US degree. I think your best bet would be to go to another country for dental school then practice there.

No offense to you or anyone else who might read this thread but the I think the US is too broken to be fixed - in my humble opinion at least. Unfortunately I saw this answer coming but I appreciate the response!

Best solution is to just apply to Canadian schools. Piece of cake!

I know what your doing.....you dont want to pay back your student loans

👍 Agreed.

I'm not sure what's making you think so, but the United States is practically the best place to practice dentistry.

I'm curious about this as well...I'd be very interested in living overseas and immigrating sometime in my life (the UK perhaps).

Kind of poses the question of why you would want to earn a dental degree from America if you think it is so bad. Wouldn't you want to earn your degree from a country you think is superior to this one?

Before we all play Jon Stuart with the OP,

Canada and the US is fine, but if you want to live somewhere else you will likely have to complete a series of licensure exams and/or education there. Dental education is best in the United States. You won't have trouble moving somewhere else from a clinical standpoint. A legal standpoint is different. BDS often have to complete American training because the education is not comparable.

it's difficult to transfer any degree internationally

but that said an american one would be one of the easiest

especially considering US dental is a predoctoral degree vs. an undergrad degree in most other countries

you'd have to redo the boards anywhere you go though

I went to a dentist in France and he said dental education is best in the states. He went to Northwestern back in the day and set up shop in France after. Dont expect the same salary though...America is one of the only countries that cares about oral health.

I was just giving you a hard time, I didn't mean to be a jerk. There's plenty not to like but that's true everywhere, so don't expect to find a utopia. But if you go to school in the US you're going to have way more debt you would from most other countries, but you won't get the same income elsewhere. One option might be to work in public health for a few years to pay off your debt then go abroad. There are some countries that make it easier for foreign dentists to get in. I think I read New Zealand is fairly easy, but double check this.

I can imagine, "hey i want to set up shop in Greece, I hear the weather's nice and has a stable economy too"
