Hi,

I am planning to take a one year gap year before going to med school. Ideally, I would like to work as a researcher somewhere and get paid.

How do people usually find research positions at labs or universities? Do you email the professors or employers directly or are there portals or websites that have job openings?

And when do you suggest I should start doing this if I am planning to work September? How competitive are the positions and how much do they usually pay?

Thank you so much,

1) Both, and also through networking. Let it be known that you're looking. Ask all old science profs and department heads if they know anyone needing help. Ask friends already in labs if their PI has an open position.

2) I'd start somewhere between January through March, depending on when your school's spring term begins. If you have experience already, you'd be more competitive, but there are near-minimum wage entry level gofer jobs available if you don't have any background.
