Hi, I just finished my first year and I'm looking to volunteer around. I applied for a position at a few hospitals but thats about it. What else can I do?? Where do I look lol I'm so lost.

Besides the hospitals (which I think will just be general patient interactions), my family doctor said that I can shadow him for a while too so I will probably do that for a few weeks. Is this good enough for a start?

What do YOU want to do?

Expressing interest, being at the right place at the right time, and being good to people gets you places.

Most places have a habitat for humanity chapter

Also, if you think you can handle the time commitment, there's a big brothers big sisters in most places.

It may seem cookie cutter, but it's cookie cutter for a reason. These are quality, meaningful ways to spend your time.

True, but I'm also of the mentality of if you're not going to give it 110% then why bother because it will show?

Does not compute. Doing habitat for humanity and big brothers big sisters is 110%. I know there's the philosophy if you HAVE to have some special specific to only you activity. But, how many people apply every year? That's an awful lot of specific special activities taken up already. Better yet, I have no doubt a lot of people submitted AMCAS littered with H4H and BBBS and got accepted. I know one for sure...

I've listened to I don't know how many speakers regarding this that give example:

Why do you want to be a doctor? Because you want to help people? How are you helping people now?

From those I've talked to, the point of the volunteering is to A. Show that you do care, and you are giving back. And B. Show that you are capable of filling up your study time, and still excelling.

Habitat and BBBS will do that.

I'm just saying that the OP should sit down and think about what they're interested in. And I provided a generic website that he/she could do some searching on. Habitat/BBBS or not, hopefully the OP can find a meaningful experience that they're gung-ho about.

I enjoy science and I like playing with chemicals and making LN2 ice cream, so anything involving science night for kids or hs science mentoring was my bag.

Yes thats good.

Volunteer work clinically-hospital
Shadowing
Some research could help you, go on your school website and email professors in certain departments that interest you.

You can go search google for volunteer opportunities in your area, whether it be community service, shelter work, and kind of volunteer work that interests you is good.
