Hi again my peeps. I was just wondering how those of you guys who have just been notified that you'll be studying medicine next year plan on paying for medical school? More specifically, do any of you have cool on ideas of how to get some or all of it paid for? I know I want to do family practice, and I know I want to stay in the state of MO, so I'll be getting $80,000 from the state to do exactly that. I'm looking up hospitals/towns that may have programs available to pay for the rest for a service agreement--again because I know I want to do FP. Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated!

I'm going to wait until hte Mega Millions Jackpot gets really high.



Although seriously, I'm working now so I'll save up my money to use for incidentals: bills, food, books, etc. Then loans for tuition and rent.

After that, we can start a Pre Med Advising business. You know how much those guys are making off of applicants (and probably their parents) just for giving info they could find just about anywhere??!
 
i'm putting $1,000 on the Bucs to win the superbowl this year.. based on the current Vegas odds, my return will be $500,000.00 which should be good enough to get me through school if Chris Simms gets his act together.

c'mon bucs, dont just do it for Tampa, do it for the struggling pre-meds out there 😳
 
You could also think about loan reimbursement after you've finished. I know a number of people who, when they hired on to a group, were given $10k to $25k/year for their student loans -- in addition to their salary. It was part of the benefits package.

It's a little more of a gamble since you have to wait until you're lining up your first practice. The plus side is you'll have time to think about your long-term goals as a physician and will be free to go where-ever you want after residency. I think I'd be too nervous to sign an extended service agreement my first year of medical school -- too many things can change between then and the end of residency.

I've thought about this as well. I dont think i'm going down the military route.. i've also explored loan reimbursement thing and it seems interesting, but I dont like the idea of having someone decide where I will end up. However, i spoke to someone who was in FP and did the health service corps thing for underserved communities and loved it. even after their contract was over, they thought about staying on (many reasons.. good benefits, you work for gov't-- no real quotas to meet vs. private practice., you're officially out at 5PM).. then again, i'm sure there are bad experiences.

for me..it's going to have to be all loans 🙁 but i am working for the next year full time..so at least i'll have a decent amount saved up for personal use. also some good news, there are hospitals that will pay you extra money in addition to your salary specifically to pay off your loans...this is more likely in private hospitals than academic, i just hope i can get that deal!

Are you talking about the PRIMO loans? Because it looks like they'll give you up to $100 k.

yeah.. Primo was part of what i was talking about.. they have already given me 20K for undergrad, and they will put another 80K toward my med school.

I am seriously considering them, unless I go out of state. I hope I can qualify for some equivalent program if I get into OSU or TCOM. Fortunately (I guess) I haven't used PRIMO for undergrad, so I could theoretically use them for the whole $100 k.
