How will your MD degree help your research?

I am considering getting a PhD in neuropathology or I can get an MD/PhD with some residency help in neurology, psychiatry or neurosurgery. I can't seem to answer two questions that popped into my mind, however...


What types of research routes will an MD degree open up that a PhD-solo can't? I have heard one thing that you don't have to waste time collaborating with a bunch of MD's who don't really now what you are shooting for, and you have a license to cut open people directly if you go into surgery.

How will an MD degree enhance your research? My own thoughts is that it allows you to know very well how the medical process of diagnosis to treatment works. As a result, you can gear research to something that can be easily used by a doctor on the rush. The knowledge of how the process works will guide your research. But then again, this seems more clinical research than basic....
