Some writers suggest that by tradition science is concerned with truth while art is concerned with beauty. How might these two endeavors be the same? How might they be irreconcilably different?

Any suggestions on how to attack this question?

Interesting question and one which might lead your thoughts in lots of places. The first thought which came to my mind was the phrase "secundum artem" which is latin translated to mean, generally, "according to art". Now...this is not art as in paintings, sculpture, theater - what we think of traditionally as art, but it is the "art" of science. In the practice of pharmacy...we learn all the didactic sciences and the clinical sciences, but some things have to be learned as an "art". Usually, it is used when we compound pharmaceuticals. There is an "art" to making a smooth emollient which does not separate or knowing the kind of flavor to add to mask a bitter or salty drug taste. That is the "art" and our compounded prescriptions have the contraction "s.a." at the end of the list of ingredients to indicate we have made the product "according to (the) art (of pharmacy)". Now beauty & truth....well...I guess I'm going to have to think a bit more, but I've seen lots of surgeries and there is definitely beauty when a surgeon does a six vessel coronary artery bypass graft! Good luck!

what essay is this we're helping you with?

That's one interesting question you got there. Do you mind telling us where you get that question from? Honestly, I wouldn't know what to say... yet =)

I guess I would just prove the validity of the original statements. I guess it's easy enough to say why science is associated with truth and art with beauty. Then you probably could thing of ways how true scientific research can be beautiful..maybe how science has revolutionized healthcare or something. You could also talk about how art can express truth in our lives and emotions. I dunno, I'm tired, lol

'Beauty is truth, truth beauty,—that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.'

Beauty can be found in science on your road to discovering the truth. The opposite can also be true for an artist. The artist can discover truths about oneself on the path to creating a work of beauty.

However, the final objective of science itself is not beauty, but to take another step toward "the truth." The same idea can be said of the artist. The goal of art is ideal beauty, not truth.

I was wondering why that question sounded familiar....

Haha. It's only been a year and I've completely forgotten my whole pharm admissions application!

I don't think I chose to write about that question. (Although, I can't seem to remember which question I did choose to write about.) 😛 But regardless, I'm just really happy I got in!
