Hi all!
I recently got a position volunteering in an Ambulatory service at a hospital, and was suppose to start next week. However, my family was hit with an unexpected financial hardship, and with being a full time graduate student I have to take on a second job that will take up pretty much all of my free time. I would like to ask my volunteer mentor to push off my start date until the semester is over (May). How would I go about writing this letter? I’m afraid she will say that I should just not start at all :/

It is shadowing... It is really not a big deal. Tell them you can't start as expected and ask if you can start in May. If not, you can find another shadowing experience after you graduate. Shadowing is not exactly the strongest part of a medical school application, to be completely honest. And there is plenty of opportunity for this type of stuff.

I apologize! I meant volunteering!

I think you're still fine. There are always opportunities to do volunteer work at hospitals and whatnot. Take care of your priorities first. If the person in charge of the volunteering says no, who cares? You will definitely be able to get volunteer hours from other places. Don't worry.
