I'm very interested in the new Cooper of RowanU medical school...however, it's brand-spanking new. How will this affect the first class? Doesn't it take a few cycles of students to work out academic kinks and whatnot?

Also, since this new school doesn't have much of any reputation (b/c there's no grads!) how will this affect the first graduating doctors and their residency match? Will it be more difficult?? I'm just looking ahead...thank you!

You'll probably be the guinea pigs.

I can see how it MIGHT affect residency in that there is no established reputation for the school, but other factors have been documented to be more important (step 1 scores, clerkship grades, etc.) in the residency application process. The kinks that you mentioned could definitely impact those other parts of the application, though.

The first class often gets full or part-tuition scholarships in reward for volunteering to be the guinea pigs, so if you're willing to risk it...

It may not be as bad as you're thinking its going to be. Yes you'll be the guinea pigs. Yes the schools won't have years of accepting residents from your school - knowing they're great. Thats really the only thing being new will affect - reputation.

However, the faculty has to come from somewhere and they will have reputations in your chosen specialty. So chances are your faculty will still be known. So if you have great letters from Dr. X that will still have value.

Everything else is pretty irrelevant. LCME is a stickler on MS1 and MS2 curriculum and they have to have all that laid out. It won't be any worse than any other school so its not like every student will flop step 1.

If someone told me they would pay half my tuition in exchange for being the first class in a school I want to be at (because of location or whatever) I would accept it without a second thought.
