I'm the type of person who likes to do adventurous activities etc. I'm a pilot and already mentioned that in my personal statement because it's a big part of who I am...but I love to do extreme things..I've been skydiving a couple of times, I've gotten the chance to travel a lot and I love traveling, I like fishing and every time I get the chance I try to go and I love learning a bit about everything..I like being busy..
The thing is that it's not like I go skydiving every week or go fishing and I already wrote my personal statement and I wouldn't like to change it cuz I think it states who I am and I'm happy with it as of now...
So I'm thinking on how could I describe those types of activities on the application...
Any suggestions? 🙂

Under EC/Activites

1. Start a heading called "Extremophile"
2. Describe these hobbies.

It will definitely make you unique which helps to set u apart.

type: extracurriculars/hobbies/avocations
name: exploration/experiences
description: explain kayaking, different rivers I've kayaked down. White water rafting and rivers/level I've done and comparison with kayaking. Sky diving and cities I've jumped in. Paragliding and contrast it to skydiving (I said paragliding is more romantic and sky diving is more an adrenaline rush). camping and hiking.

Then a couple of sentences about how I'm always willing to try new stuff, get out of my element, and take something out of new experiences about controlling my emotions/fears and relaxing/destressing.

Definetely put this as one of your fifteen activities on AMCAS. Things like this catch the mind of application raters and interviewers. You would be suprised how many applications look nearly identical... hospital volunteering, summer research, club officer, international trip and studying overseas... Seeing something like an interesting hobby helps break up the monotony.

Thanks for the helpful advice everyone 🙂

Nice job with the pilots license...thats really awesome! The summer after senior year I got about 20 hours in a Katana DA 20...but didnt have enough funds to finish up. I would love start up flying again someday 👍 definite plus on the apps

Hello Willen!...Thanks!! Flying is amazing as you may know.. I have almost 100 hours now on a Cessna-172. I was working on my instruments license but had to stop to study for the MCAT 🙁 I might continue over the summer..Whenever you get the chance, finish up and get your license..you'll absolutely love it 🙂 🙂

Flakpilot, i'm just curious:

Do you ever fly alone? Was flying scary at some point (beginning perhaps).
Is it true that propeller powered planes are inherently less safe than jet-powered? How about smaller planes, are they less safe? Say Embraer ERJ-140 VS Boeing 747?

I love Flight Simulator n all, but I've too scared of heights :scared::scared::scared:.

Hi Bernoull!!
What's your definition of flying alone? No instructors or no passengers?.
Either way, there are two ways in which you can obtain a private pilot license. Under the Federal Aviation rules part 141 and part 61. For part 141 you need less hours, but I did it part 61. For part 61 you need at least 30 hours of instructon and have to fly for at least 10 hours completely alone (no passengers allowed) before being able to obtain your private pilot license .

For me, flying alone was CRAZY scary the first couple of times, specially on your first solo flight (gotta do 3 take offs and landings). I cried before going cuz I was too scared hahah. However, I would say my first solo was one of the most happiest moments in my life.
When you need to do your first solo cross-country (a flight for about an hour an a half, depending on the distance) it's pretty scary as well. I started to hear new weird sounds on the airplane haha.. but eventually you gain confidence and get to know the airplane and yourself very well.

Also, my dad is a pilot and when we were little we had an accident while landing and I was TERRIFIED of landings since then. But I still remembered the joy of flying and traveling and eventually forgot about that and now landings are my favorite part. Oh and I'm also afraid of heights, and you'd be surprised but most pilots I know are afraid of heights as well haha which I find funny. So if your fear of heights is what's holding you back, don't even think about it and give it a try.

About the safety of the airplanes. It's relative. Bigger airplanes are considered safer because they have more backup systems, and airplanes with more than one engine are considered safer because if one fails you have the other one. But this doesn't mean that small/propeller/single engine airplanes are not safe. Think about it, a Cessna-172, is the most common airplane used for training pilots. Think about all the students who are learning to land for example, all the mistakes they make and at the begining their landings are generally HORRIBLE and still Cessnas-172 from the 70's are being used and overcome all of the pain the students have them go thru haha. That tells me those little airplanes are amazing...
Plus..if you are flying around and your engine stops, it's not like the single engine airplane is going to go down inmediately, the airplane glides and there are procedures that you are taught to take advantage of that and be able to save your life.

So..if you are thinking about learning how to fly... don't even think about it for a minute!! and do it as soon as you can, you'll love it!!..If you have any more questions you can always PM me I'll be happy to answer them... 🙂

PS: sorry about any grammar errors or anything..3 am and very sleepy lol 🙂

I would love to finish up. I had a great time. The DA 20 weighs like nothing. And while its nothing compared to a 172...the power to weight ratio is pretty decent. I actually had an opportunity to solo before I stopped my lessons and it was such a blast. Last thing I remember doing were power on stalls and trying to get enough rudder in to not corkscrew haha. fun times for all

Hey Willen!
Haha I've never flown a DA 20 but yeah it does look like it weighs nothing. It's great that you got the chance to solo..amazing feeling right?? haha and power on stalls were a bit scary for me at the begining but i eventually got used to them haha. They're fun!. I recently learned how to do a low approach, it is pure awesomeness as well! 🙂
