How would you have handled this?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Those comments seem pretty racist to me. Racist apologetics is just as bad as racism to me.

Yes I want to report people that make statements I don't agree with....exclusively when those statements are hateful and racist...

There are no comments here, you didn't even see them but you've determined they are "pretty racist", but not "seriously racist" or "very racist"?

Who gets to determine what is or is not a hateful comment?
You?
Someone who doesn't like you and overhears you after a couple of drinks and then reports back to your dean on Monday?

Wait, so it's okay to say whatever you want (i.e. racist slurs in this context), but it's hypocritical for other people to call you out? Interesting...

Red herring, try reading that again.

There is a huge difference between confronting someone on their ideas that you view to be distasteful (aka what I'm doing right now) and trying to ruin their careers by reporting them to their medical school administration.

Actually I talked this over with several strangers (people in the class), friends and different races and they determined it was racist. Further, I'm pretty sure the administration will justly determine if it is racist or not, given their right to decide the fate of their class makeup.

Let me ask you this, does it change your mouth foaming to know this person isn't white?

Why are you trying to justify the guy's act with argumentation? There's no need to be combative.

Some people just don't think it's decent to be making blatant racist comments on social media. Have some decorum, for Pete's sake!

I like how you're saying things like "hypocrite", and "red herring" when all you've done is bring a strawman to this thread in attempts to derail it and start a flame war.

Context is your friend.
The argumentation was used to point out that I've not once advocated not "calling out" someone's racism . But, I object to the kind of thought policing and character assassinating that so many here are advocating for.

Have we reached a verdict on this first amendment case yet guys???

Which strawman would that be?

Let's see:
Your very first post that I "told on" this person, when I did not. Your claim that I'm trying to "crucify" this person, when I obviously am not.

Let me ask you this, does it change your mouth foaming to know this person isn't white?

You're missing the point. I'm more concerned with your action than the one I didn't see myself.

You told on your future classmate over what you determined to be racist remarks?
Seriously?

You shouldn't be surprised by this.

Behavior like this will be VERY rampant in your future career. In med school, residency, etc. If someone finds something distasteful, or offensive, they will spread it like wildfire with a huge smile.

Then again, for the most part, people aren't overly offensive in a public setting anyway, so it doesn't affect a lot of people.

Yep. This has happened. People aren't afraid to go to higher ups if they find someone is unprofessional to a certain extent.

But like others said, if they are openly saying something racist, homophobic, etc, they should never be surprised for one millisecond that everyone around the school/hospital will know and call them out.

This is not how the world works. If you say things amongst friends or people who like you, they're not going to stab you in the back. If you're being an ass in a public setting full of hundreds of people you can bet your ass someone will say something.

Translation:
If you're a douche, people are not going to look out for you/have your back.

cru·ci·fy
: to kill (someone) by nailing or tying his or her hands and feet to a cross (I had hoped I could assume you and others would know that I wasn't using this meaning, however I've been proven wrong twice, now)

: to criticize (someone or something) very harshly

True, usually douchy people get what they deserve.

With the second sentence, with a group of catty girls, I wouldn't be so sure, especially with the whole frenemies thing 😛

I wouldn't have done anything about it. Confronting him won't change his views and I don't want to deal with the blow-back of the situation. Anyone dumb enough to post racist garbage on a public forum like Facebook is probably dumb enough to beat my ass for reporting him.

In your class social media group you see someone make a post you haven't met or talk to. You click on their profile and they have blatant racist (no epithets but every reasonable person would agree including those in my class who saw) remarks all over to minorities and other races as well. I felt compelled to confront them to let them know how stupid they were and should be mindful of what they post on social media. They delete their postings, say it won't happen again and block you. I had a classmate already tell the administration. Thoughts?

My thought process was to avoid the person and if I came in contact to just let everyone know what kind of person they were if anyone else was around (tactfully). Kind of a tough situation.

please keep convo civil.

Reporting this to the administration is a fair thing to do as this person made this comment in a public forum, and should be called out for it. Confronting this person was also the right thing to do as they should pay a price (if only in the sense of having a uncomfortable discussion with you about their behavior) for their action. Telling every person that might come in contact with him/her that this person is a racist might be a bit of an overreaction, not practical, as well as a poor use of your time and effort.

P.S. You're posting on SDN about a race issue and expect the conversation to remain civil? lol, good luck with that.

Patassa, stop. Your posts read like you just finished a wikipedia article on logical fallacies. No one cares.

An accepted premed shouldn't be that ignorant but I don't know about the whole telling on him thing. We had some kid tell a dean about something one of my classmates posted on facebook and we had a classwide meeting with the administration. Now that kid keeps posting bs on his facebook page about injustices that black people are facing like an article about how there were no blacks in the top spot for the billboard 100 last year and how blacks are being discriminated against because Jay-Z only got 10 million for advertising from Samsung. It's incredibly annoying. Kid is acting like he's a modern day Rosa Parks or something.

No.
I wish everyone posting here had just finished the wikipedia article on logical fallacies, though.
It's most efficient to not make them, next to call them out, last to explain why what someone just said is logically fallible.
I'd rather call it what it is then explain to someone why their rebuttal isn't one.

Honestly, you're the only one who thinks you sound smart. You sound like a college kid that just discovered these things. These boards are for discussion, not for bs about red herrings and strawmen. Stfu with that because no one cares.

I have just been called Hitler for not wanting racism to exist. Yup, I think its time to take a hiatus from SDN until my cycle.

Case study in logical fallacies.

1. You were not called Hitler, the OP was (sorta). Did you miss the very obvious , "OP:" before the picture was posted? The shout-out to your particular brand of "authoritarianism" was in the first paragraph.

2. You didn't say you didn't want racism to not exist, you said "I don't think society (especially in the upper-eschelons of educated society) has room for those people to exist."
Those people = racist.
Racism is a belief, a racist is a person.

Solid ad hominem.

I'm a philosophy major and even I find your brand of intellectualism insufferable.

Good ol' Godwin's Law, derailing arguments since time immemorial 🙄

Do explain.

Well, throughout all the arguing and bickering in this thread, it is conclusive that you can tolerate someone for saying/posting blatant things online. That speaks a lot about your character and decency as a human being. For someone to call you out on it is not an ad hominem attack per se.

Solid ad hominem.

No it's not. I'm not rejecting your arguments because of an irrelevant fact about your character. I'm telling you that you sound like an idiot. It's not even close to an ad hominem. It's pointing out a character trait. The fact that you don't even understand the phrases that you keep spouting speaks volumes.
