I interviewed at VCU on October 2. At the interview, they told us that our files would potentially be reviewed before October 15. On October 15, we would either be accepted, or put on hold for a decision at a later date (the next decision date being Dec. 15). I just received the following status update today:

"The Admissions Committee has met to discuss your file. Your application is being placed on hold for action at a later date. We anticipate making offers October 15, December 15, at the end of January, and mid-March.

You will receive no further communication from us concerning your hold status. The next status change will be to offer you a position in the class, to notify you that you have been placed on the alternate list in mid-March, or to notify you that the committee will no longer be considering your file. However, this page will have a message at the top indicating each time offers are made.
We thank you for your interest in our school."

How would you guys interpret this? Does it mean that I could still potentially be accepted on October 15 and this update isn't really telling me anything new? Or have they placed me in the hold category for a decision later in the year? I'm sort of confused by this email and don't know what to make of it. Please, any insight or interpretation would be helpful. Thanks!

Mimi~
I'm not applying to VCU, so I can't relate with my own situation, but it sounds like their sending this message to everybody. I just think you received that message to "officially" state what they told you at your interview...

good luck 🙂

they're*

uhhh, this is why I should write when I have a hangover, lol

You're probably right, and I'm probably just being overly paranoid.
Thanks for your response.

I feel your hangover pain...argh!

ETSU does the same thing, if you interviewed early and your packet went through the adcom early in the process you will be put "on hold" until they can accept you after October 15. So being on hold is good now for ETSU because some folks will be rejected post-interview...because of AMCAS rules they really cannot accept you yet. Of course this is for ETSU and VCU may be different but I am assuming that it is kind of the same case.

I speak from experience with VCU and their process.

All interviewees are sent that email. Everyone is placed on that post-interview hold. That means now you can either be rejected, accepted or waitlisted, which would occur in late spring.

Usually only the very, very best get in during the 10/15 acceptance period. If you aren't in that batch you will basically have to wait and wait until those other dates. There is nothing you can add except maybe fall grades. The comittee has given you a rating value and that WILL NOT change. What you are given is what you stay with. You can let them know you are still interested as time goes on by, BUT that committee value has placed you in a ranking and it WILL NOT change EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They are pretty good about sticking to those dates. And it will be sent through email only. You will get an email telling you to check your status. They ususally send the emails out around 5 pm on those days.

If you are waitlisted towards the end of the application year you will be placed onto one of two lists. Out-of state or in-state. For every student who withdraws their acceptance another student is pulled from the list that person would have been on. Example an instater withdraws so a waitlisted instater gets accepted. Thsi occurs from May 15 till August 10 and then it's over.

Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This means that your rank was not high enough to offer you a spot. But the hold is good and most likely you will hear in March w/ everyone else that has been placed on hold and those that interviewed late. The problem is that by March the class is over 75% full so its all a matter of luck.
Good luck though.

Uh...but what about what Amy B says about everyone receiving this email? I tend to agree with how she interpreted it.

Yup, Amy B is right. That's exactly how the Admissions Director explained it during my interview day.

I also heard that this year's applicant pool is uber competitive, especially at VCU/MCV. Ah well, so much for 10/15 notification. I think I'll be more hopeful on the December date (just as long as I don't get rejected first  ).
