I'm "non-black" and I was offered an interview at Meharry (I declined).

I interviewed at Meharry but I applied there for a different reason. My familiy is form knoxville and its only 3 hours away. There was one caucasian student at my interview when we met with the students. Also there was one or two students of other races when we sat in on a class as well. As they state in their missions statements they are traditionally black schools.

My understanding is that the non-black students that they interview and admit at these two schools typically express an interest in serving black communities and have demonstrated a committment to things like serving inner city communities in the past.

I'm white and I was admitted to Meharry but didn't attend because I got into ETSU-Quillen COM (much cheaper and better ranked). I didn't express interest in serving black communities per se, although in my personal statement I did express interest in underserved communities. That also helped me get into ETSU because it's a rural medicine school.

The reason I was admitted to Meharry, I believe, was I blew away the second interview. I was happy. Woo-hoo!

Everyone at Meharry was very nice, but I'm happy (and financially in a MUCH better situation) at QCOM, though. 🙂

There is a white family medicine doctor at the Mayo Clinic that graduated from Meharry and has lots of good things to say about it.

I attend Meharry and love it.....was accepted elsewhere, but chose to matriculate in Nashville for the extreme sense of support I felt, which, in fact, has turned out to be true. Have done the ivy league thing as an undergrad, and feel it is SOOOOOOOOOOOO overrated. My 2 cents.

Actually I have a lot of friends at Howard, all of whom are non-black. like the previous poster stated, they were "traditionally". I would say knowing what I know of my friends (many of whom attended Ivy League undergrads and did well) that Howard is a great school. I think this ranking thing is untrue. if any one notices US NEWS doesnt 'rank' anymore, except for the top ten schools or so.

additionally, knowing my friends at Howard, I know that they are doing soo much more clinically oriented things even as second years. I was very very impressed. I know that some of the things that students there new, people who are 3rd and 4th years at my school wouldnt have.

I truly believe that physicians that are produced from Howard are more then well equipped and competent (lol..i sound like an ad but its true)

just my two cents.

I am white and I go to Meharry. I really like it as well. The biggest positive for me is that my class is amazing. Really. I am constantly surprised by how much people go out of their way to help each other and help the class as a whole. Everyone is very open and friendly and it just makes for a nice environment since we spend so much time together during the basic sciences. We have a small class (80) which I think helps. I think there is a lot of diversity here, both from a personality perspective and from an ethnic perspective. It is one of the things I really like about it. I don't think my race played a factor in my admission either way.
