I am curious about the student body at Howard. I know that 70-80% of the class is AA and most of the rest are some other URM. What about the white and asian students, if there are any; does everyone get along? I am interested in a cohesive class and in choosing between Howard, Meharry and other schools I would like to be at a place where everyone is like a happy family. When I interviewed at Meharry I had a great impression that the school and its students are all about making everyone feel welcomed.

I did get somewhat of the same imoression at Howard but I so sick the day of my interview that I didn't get to interact with the students there or ask questions.

Any input on this subject would greatly be appreciated because I plan on making my decision and deposit soon.

Thanks

I went to Howard(for an interview) and from what I saw (and what fourth year students said) everybody seemed to be getting along pretty well. Even though the majority of the students are AA, you can still see the diversity in the group. Everyone appeared to really be one big family, and they really try to make everyone feel at home.

medicine 2006,

I think you already know the answer to your question since you already visited both schools and mentioned that you felt welcome there, so your question seems a little ignorant. I think at ANY school the focus is to obtain a good medical education. If African-American students worried about feeling comfortable and getting along with everyone at majority institutions, they would have never achieved any type of success.

Please rid yourself of your prejudices before starting school. You will only do more harm to yourself. Also, be thankful for the opportunity to study at Howard or Meharry, which by the way have produced some of our nation's leading physicians, political figures and role models.

I'm not trying to be mean, but sometimes tough love is the best way to cure ignorance. Congratulations and Good Luck with your final decision.

choisimd,

Thanks for the reply. You don't even know me so please don't be so quick in calling me ignorant. I have no prejudices. I believe Howard to a great school and the students to be cohesive. However, I can only be at one interview date and my impressions of the school were clouded by the fact I was battling the flu that day. My post was only to ask what other SDNers felt on their interviews so that I could get a better picture of the institution.

And if you thought that I am not an URM you would be wrong.

Med 2006 -

I am sure you will be fine at either of those schools, and you question okay to ask. Choisimd has clearly been told how and what to think by his or her brainwashing profs. You can just hear choisimd reciting the mantra -"they have produced some of our nation's leading physicians, political figures and role models.". No one said that they had not - choisimd is a little defensive, don't you think? Believe it or not, discrimination can occur in both directions. I have heard that white profs at schools like that have complained about discrimination in the advancement process.

medicine2006,

I didn't say you were ignorant, if you were I know you wouldn't have applied to either schools, I said your comment seemed a little ignorant. But thanks for the clarification. As for crazygop, I'm not reciting anything...it's simply the truth! 😀

sorry for releashing any fire people...but this whole interview process has me on edge. 😛

Thank you everybody for your response and support. I am very happy to be able to attend medical school next year. Good luck to everyone.
