This question is directed to currents students. How do you handle parking? I have been accepted to the School of Pharmacy and was told don't depend on getting a parking permit. I do not plan to live near campus. Are there any park and rides near campus? I definetly need to bring my car as close as possible in case I need to leave to check on child, etc.
If I can drive near campus and park and ride bus/train to campus i could live with that.

thanks!

I'm not a student at Howard, but they do have a metro stop.

When I go to DC I prefer taking metro to avoid sitting in rush hour traffic.

I was wondering the same thing. Is it even worth it to bring my car? It seems like everyone in DC takes the metro.

You could apply for parking. There is a parking lottery and if you get choosen you can park for over $200. Probably closer to $300.00 a year. Yeah, parking is so limited that there is a lottery. I have never done this but i recommend it. If you don't you will be getting tickets frequently. You may think you are beating the system by finding non-metered parking. But I would only do this a few hours at a time. It depends on which parking enforcement officials are working that day. Some let you park in the free street parking all day and then other days you may get a ticket. Ofcourse free street parking is limited. The number of tickets I have gotten make the paid parking worth while. Oh and just so you know...I follow the rules. Pay my meter etc. The ticket enforcement always finds a way to get you. If you can get the metro go ahead. There is a shuttle bus that can take you to and from the metro stop. However, be aware that the buses do not always come on time. Sometimes you are better off walking. If you choose to walk to the metro stop I think it is about 2 blocks. Not a bad walk. Be prepared to meet all the DC characters on you way.

i checked into the parking lottery and it is not available if this is your first year on campus.🙁 i'm from NC where we drive everywhere! so this "public transportation" thing should be quite an adventure! i will be living off campus (got a hubby and child) so i think i am going to check into parking at a metro as close as possible and riding shuttle or walking to campus.

thanks for the info!

The lottery is for students living on campus, the underground parking at the towers. For parking at the parking lots, you have to go through a parking registration process online on a certain assigned date, which was actually 3 days ago for next year. If you are not registered for the semester, you can't register for a decal. However, next fall, there will be a limited number of decals which will not be picked up and they will be reassigned to whoever registers again on an assighed date. So just check the parking website periodically for when the date is...........

FYI......the ticketing lady is not friendly!!!!
