Hey guys, I was just wondering what your chances of acceptance into Howard are if you're not black or Hispanic. I'm Persian and I'm getting gipped on this minorty deal! 😀

Something like 7% of all dentists in the US are Persian. That's 3 times more than the general Persian population. Persians are def. not minorities in the dental world so no help there.

This is so untrue! I'm tired of the misconception people have that these schools (Howard, Meharry) ONLY accept a few non-minorities. I have visited both institutions and, much to my surprise, they were rather diverse. True, these schools have historically strived to increase the minority population of healthcare professionals with hopes that the ratio of minorities in this nation to minority physicians/dentists could be somewhat proportional; however, each school also believes that diversity in an institution creates a holistic learning environment. So do your research before you assume people!!!! Thanks!

As per the ADEA Official Guide to Dental school, 44th edition, page 24:

Total seats: 85

African American students: 64
Hispanic: 9
Native American: 2
Asian American: 6

85 - (64+9+2+6) = 4

4 non-minorites.

What additional research do you want?

pdizzle, you're the dearest ...you are mr. predents.com..so no one dares to question your research, especially if it is related to ADEA. sure, only 4 whites got in. but is this because meharry and howard are very picky when it comes to whites or is it because whites simply dont apply to them (or apply, and then not go to inTview?). pdizzle, perhaps you are all too aware, like me, that many whites would rather not go to d-school as opposed to going to a miority d-school. if i were to think of two terms in U.S culture that are associated with lack of coolness, lack of glamor, lack of respect, small pay, unsexiness, low funding, ineficiency...etc, those two terms would be MINORITY and PUBLIC...lol...many white kids would rather not go to d-school all together if they find themselves not competitive enough for the non-minority schools. the fact that only 4 whities got in is a matter of ego and cultural issues as opposed to rejection by the minority schools.

You suggest that maybe non-minorites do not apply. Lets look at a few more numbers, also taken from ADEA 44th ed..

Total number of applicants = 1,829
African American apps = 397
Assian Apps = 666
Hispanic Apps = 117
Native American Apps = 5
Non-minority apps = 644

% of applicants attending (using data from previous post)

African American: 64/397 = 16.1%
Hispanic: 9/117 = 7.7%
Native American: 2/5 = 20.0%
Asian: 6/666 = 0.9%
Non-minority = 4/644 = 0.6%


This information, plus the comparably low GPA and DAT scores of the average student, can be used to draw your own conclusion about your chances of getting in. I am making no political statement nor saying anything about the school itself. It could be an excellent school, I know nothing about it. I just think that they have an agenda. It's no different then Loma Linda choosing on the basis of religion.

I also see you point how Howard may have accepted many non-minorities but they chose to decline. Unfortunately I do not have that data. Maybe next cycle PreDents.com may shed some light on this!! 🙂

Well im white and im applying to Howard and Meharry.... If i get accepted next cycle, I will add the stat to your fantastic webpage! I personally have no problem with going to school with "minorities", they are all people to me, i dont see color...

Im a "whitey" and I interviewed at Howard this past Febuary. I would love to go there based off of thier Dental program alone. They have had a 100% passing rate of the part two boards this past year and thats much more than many schools can say. So what if they dont let that many white people in, I got rejected by alot of white majority schools so to me Howard has not been one bit prejudice. I didnt apply there based off of low stats either. Ive been doing dental research for three years and have had 6 papers published as well as having my research presented to Dentists around the world. I guess its easy for alot of people to knock a school for racial prejudice, but not one of you knows anymore than what you read in the Dental stats book. Howard is a good school and Ill get the same degree there as I would at Harvard.

I'm an Arab American and I dont get any minority status either, but I do get "randomly" selected for searches many times when I fly. And something really shocking happened a few week ago when I flew to temple. The ticket agent asked me to take my vail off to confirm my identity (I'm a guy and no I dont have a vail). They said "You know it says here that I have to ask u to take ur vail off but obviousley you dont have one. hmmm" and then another worker told them that they seem to have that vail thing on every arab name or something.

They should rest assured, it not like I'm from a minority, I'm white..ha ha..ha..

I think asian, persians, arabs need to be considered minorities. That's all the goups that I can think of right now that should be added.

If you are a minority that isnt recongnized, make it known at your interview. Tell them your bilingual if you are. Make them aware of how multicultured you are.

did you have to remove your vail before the interview?

Actually I think I'm going to apply to Dental school at Howard. I haven't researched it much, but it does seem like a good school. I'll show up to my interview wearing a bright yellow suit with a purple shirt. Oh yeah, I might be sportin my dewrag too!
