hey guys,

can you explain why Howard's stats are so - what's a kind way to say - pitiful? is the clinic and/or curriculum bad or what? are people not applying to the school? I know they emphasize community service and helping the lower class but are dentists out of Howard required to focus on the inner-cities?

Touchy subject....stats don't mean much at Howard. The most pc way of saying it is that they have a different "mission" than most schools -- big focus on taking minorities.

They don't neccesarily make less money. As with any other accredited dental schools, Howard produces competent dentists - you go through pretty much the exact same thing. It's just that they have a different focus compared to other schools, hence the lower stats.

what exactly is their "focus"? I would like to apply here because I have a bunch of my family in the DC area and I genuinely enjoy community service and such. Are the dentists required to do certain things that turns away people from applying there?

You can do a search and find at least 50 threads on this topic, but since you didn't try that first as would be reasonable, I'll answer this as best I can.

1. If you want to do go Howard and are not Black or Hispanic, applying is a waste of your money. Over 89% of their class is one of these 2 groups.

2. They are pretty competitive despite their low stats

3. Underrepresented minorities are accepted here because there are so few of them that apply overall and their academic opportunities may have been limited and so they may not be as competitive overall (but still decent). If you haven't noticed, many other schools are predominantly white. There are plenty of black or hispanic people who would rather go to a black or hispanic for care because they can better relate. Furthermore, if these people that go to Howard or Meharry have come from the inner city, they may open practices there to help out the group they are used to... their home. It isn't that their stats are pitiful, it is that they are gearing their education to those who may not have had all the experiences you and I have. THeir medical school is the same way...and in my opinion, that is good.

They have a strong preference for underrepresented minorities. Namely people of African American, American Indian and Hispanic origins.

Point being, if you are not an underrepresented minority, DON'T APPLY! Waste of money... but that's just a repeat of what I said anyway. Apply if you want, but if you are in the majority aka white, you likely will NOT get in.

1. Tell us what we have wrong
2. Answer the OPs question yourself...and
3. Tell us how the raw stats from the schools directly are wrong

After that, I am willing to wager (not that it matters) that you are an underrepresented minority. It is fine... that is Howard, that is Meharry. It is common knowledge. That said, good luck to you.

That's good, but also speaking from first hand experience... I have known quite a few white people that applied to Howard. Not one of them has even gotten an interview... all different stats, all different walks of life. If you aren't a minority... you are wasting your money unless you are one of the very lucky few.

Remember, there is a big difference between someone who is an "under-represented-minority" vs. someone who is "under-deserved". I have plenty of friends that are minorities, but have had a more priviledged up-bringing than myself (white/non-hispanic according to AADSAS). Just some food for thought.

Of course. I would be disappointed to find out if anyone that was accepted into ANY dental school was under-deserved. I have heard Howard is an excellent school.
