I am from Houston and going to Howard in the Fall. Where are you going to stay up there? I don 't know where I am going to stay yet.

The main thing to deal with the first year is anatomy, biochem, and occlusion. There is one thing that I would do and that is start reading ahead in all three courses.

For gross, I would start on the back muscles since that is where the first year gross course begins. For biochem, I would just begin reading the second book above to make your life easier once the fall starts. I would do the same thing for the third book on occlusion.
If it hasn't already, a second year student will be assigned to help ease the transition.
As far as living, I would recommend Silver Springs, MD as a good option. Many HU dental students reside there, and are comfortable since it is relatively close to school via the metro or driving, but be advised that parking is limited around HU.
I hope this helps.

Mr.E said:Anyone talk to admissions or the finacial aid department lately? I'm curious to know when they are supposed to send the financial aid award letter? And exactly when we get a class schedule?
TX2thDR said:I called again today to find out and I keep getting a message saying to call during office hours (even though I already am) and to leave a message with a number... My private loans are still awaiting approval/verification through Howard and the sooner I get these loans, the sooner I can quit my job 👍
Mr.E said:If you don't mind me asking, what lender did you go thru for private loans (I'm assuming the private loans are those that go directly to you and not the school?)? I'm looking into the "tuition answer loan" from Salle Mae, hoping that I can qualify and quit my job and head up to find a place in Maryland sometime in July.
miraclegirll said:I was just wondering where you guys are planning to live and what you've heard about on campus housing in regards to safety. Also, is it recommended to have a car?
TX2thDR said:hey thats exactly what i'm trying to do. i applied through Chase and Wells Fargo but got denied because I had no cosigner. Citibank CitiAssist is what I'm currently waiting for and it has a better interest rate than the others. you can to to www.citibank.com and select student loans or simply go to www.studentloan.com
Mr.E said:I'm planning on looking for housing in Montgomery county. Montgomery county is safer than DC. Living near the school is going to be dangerous, but people do it. So it all depends on what your willing to put up with for the next 4 years. In montgomery places like Silver Spring, Gaithersburg, Germantown are safer communities. I've heard that several HU students live there. These places range from a 20 minute commute to upwards of 45 minutes by train or metro. Parking is hard to find near Howard, so the commute by train or metro is preferable and allows for study time.
RozhonDDS said:My brother lives in Germantown, he is a chemist at MedImmune, and has lived in large cities his whole life and usually never complained, but he said Germantown is a dump and the crime around the town is horrible, he just signed a lease closer the D.C., but its your call
Crest said:Orientation begins on Aug 14. I think the class schedule should be up within the next week or so on HUCD's website.
Yup, basically if you're dumb and black you have one foot in the door but if you're white or even dumb and white you have no shot...makes a ton of sense. I know someone who attends howard and they said if it wasn't for the huge curves, half of his class would have failed out already... 👎cbennett said:LOOK at there stats on predent.com for the GPA of the students that applied and who were accepted. It is MUCH lower for the ones that were accepted than for the ones who applied but due to the race of the students who had the lower grades they got accepted. I wonder if they follow that polocy you always see when applying to schools or a job aboud "not discimiating based on race, relig creed.... and so forth. The entire administrative commitee should be locked up for DISCRIMINATION.

Crest said:RACIST? DISCRIMINATION? REALLY? This topic is one that has been talked about ad nauseum on the boards. May I ask if your shallow perception of Howard (and Meharry I'm assuming) is based off of your own rejection from the school? CBENNETT, my friend, Howard's method of accepting its students is not based SOLELY off of gpa and standardized test scores. Of course they have requirements, just as any other ACCREDITED dental school, but we all know that high test scores and a competitive GPA does not necessarily equate good interpersonal skills and/or empathy for those under your care. I apologize, CBENNET, if Howard breaks away from the norm by not giving way entirely to the "stats" game, but rather by seeking students who are interested in careers in dentistry for reasons outside of its monetary benefits. To my knowledge, Howard has been kicking out excellent dentists for years, so clearly they must be doing something right. Thus, if your the son/daughter of an established dentist with an excellent GPA and stellar DAT scores, unless you have done extensive volunteering or shown your committment to serving the underserved or even displayed a true desire to attend Howard, then it likely isn't gonna get you that coveted acceptance letter. Sorry!!!!
-And by the way, if Howard is so "racist". What accounts for the non-african american student population? Or furthermore, the content of the non-african american students?
Yah-E said:Dentistry need schools such as Howard and Meharry: 1) to provide an opportunity for minorities to get into dentistry and 2) look for other attributes in applicants other than numbers. :

hockeydentist said:I, but again theres nothing wrong with bringing in diversity in the dental profession.
cbennett said:I dont mind diversity as long as its not at someones expence. A MORE QUALIFIED STUDENT HAD TO BE REJECTED INORDER TO ALLOW A LESS QUALIFIED STUDENT TO GET THE ACCEPTANCE. That my friend is where i have a problem
cbennett said:Schools #1 job is to provide an education to the most qualified students. Does anyone think that the NBA needs teams that give whites/asians/hispanics/na an opportunity to play.
Hell lets give that team a 30 point handicap while were at it. HOWARD IS RACIST and every person in the administration should be locked up for discrimination. All you need to do is look at predent.com and see that the numbers on the people who apply are significantly higher than who are accepted but because the people with the lower scores are "most likely black" they give them that 30 handicap i refered to above. I would feel insulted to go to Howard knowing i got in just because of my race.
BTW i am 50%+ NA for anyone that is curious and i will not put that down on my application becasue i have higher ethical standard and i would feel like S$%$ knowing that i participated in racism by accepting an offer that i got through a school discrimintating against someone else. I hope that everyone at that school with below par stats knows that they got in BY INDIRECTLY DISCRIMINATING better qualified students. Also for those of you who think that im pissed that i dident get accepted there i am going to be a senior next year with a 3.79 gpa and 3.84 science GPA at UCLA/PENN and will not even think about applying to HOWARD

thomast98 said:What a joke. It's like the police department taking the black guy who scores an 80 on the test over the white guy who scores a 90 just because the black guy has darker skin...It's B.S.

cbennett said:I would never take my kid to a dentist that graduated from howard if he/she was black. Not becasue i'm racist, but because i am against racism and i would rather know my kid was in the hand a student that had to work to get were he was not had **** handed to him. (I DO REALIZE THAT NOT ALL BLACKS HAD GOT IN BECAUSE OF THERE RACE, but many did so i would not want to take the risk.)
Who the hell picks a SN after a toothpaste company???crest get a life. Your argument is a joke. You make PRESIDENT BUSH look like a good debater. You obviously are one of those idiots at Howard that got in(or wold get in) because your skin tone not because of your intellectual potential. I got a ? about what you(crest) said. You mentioned some thing like "what if the black guy had more experieance" DO YOU REALY THINK THAT THEY GOT IN BECAUSE THEY HAD MORE EXPERIENCE(experience in what FAILING) I some how doubt that of 255 blacks that applied and the 75 that got accepted all had more experiance than the other 1300 people that applied and only 8 got accepted. AND FOR THOSE OF YOU SAYING THEY PLAN TO SERVE UNDERSERVED AREAS WHEN THEY GRADUATE i really doubt all of them will plus if that was true wouldent it be about income and area you plan to move to and not skin color. Also i would think there would be more Latinos and Native Americans, and poor white and asian kids(but there are not).
So the obvious reason these people got in was because of skin tone.
And one more ? for crest, What qualifies a student as Qualified, you failed to mention what you thought made a student qualified in you post above.
Please be sure to respond to both (2) the ?s above and CLEARLY give your opinion.

vize said:statements from people like cbennett and thomast98 are just statements made because of what they've supposedly heard or what they've selectively heard. like mr. e and others have said, how are you not qualified if you're able to pass all of the tests and become licensed? it's like they're mad at the fact that someone could be less of a nerd and still become a dentist. sorry to break it to you, but paper numbers don't mean **** when it comes to being a good dentist. they're only useful for majority of schools to gauge how you will perform as a dentist based off of the statistics of others who have performed well while also scoring well on paper.
another thing that amazes me is how much people want to be segregated on these forums. i always see threads like 'white pre-dents!', 'persian pre-dents!', etc. who really gives a ****? aren't we all supposed to help out others who are interested in the same field as us? i've only checked out the white pre-dents thread and it seemed like a haven for people to rant about how pissed off they are that whites are slowly losing the 100% acceptance rate that they once had. once again i'm sorry to hurt your reality, but diversity is natural; not having diversity is unnatural.
Crest said:No, CBENNETT you get a life. I became disinterested in everything you had to say along time ago. Its obvious that your trying to pull every trick out of your hat to prove your failing argument, but to try to be funny and make a big deal out of an SN NAME?! How JUVENILE is that??? Grow up! A wise person once said "never argue with an idiot because from a distance, people may have trouble telling you apart"...truer words were never spoken. So with that being said, I will bid you adieu. Good luck in life, your a joke. Start your own Howard bashing thread. This one wasn't intended for those purposes. If you have a rebuttal to anything I have said, you can take that up with me in private messages. Im sure that the good folks on SDN are tired of reading this BS. And as for as my intellectual potential or ethnicity, dont speak on things you know nothing about. The notion that you use assumptions and not facts, would parallel yourself more to the debating techniques of George Bush, not I.
