Hey all!

I know that the third Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban does not come out until June 4th, 2004, but all the Harry Potter fans, holla at another huge fan of the books and movies! The medical school process is stressing enough. Let's talk about something fun! I read all the books this past summer. I even took a few of the books with me to my summer program in Brazil. It is an awesome series!

--DrJ2B, of Gryffindor

ahh penn lover is a potter lover as well. nice

yeah the hp series are very good.

if i were to rank them in order of how i liked them.....

it would be 4,5, then the remainings switch back and forth...

tho in 5 he is a bit more in adolescent whining mode...but i guess we've all been through that haha.

so next june huh? well i can start off my last summer before med school with a nice movie.

Lounge? SPeaking of the Lounge, I think that's where this thread will be heading...

hey think of something med schooly to say so it stays here haha...

so you think hogwarts has a medical school affiliated with it? or do you think medical training is part of the 6-7th year curriculum?

how do you think it compares with Northwestern?

Hey jlee!

There is actually some truth to that. Madam Pomfrey is going for a post-bacc program during the school year (this is not mentioned in the books because J. K. Rowling told me on the low when we had tea in London last winter break that children would not understand this). Madam Pomfrey is always yelling at people to leave and such because her post-bacc education at Oxford is quite time-consuming and stress-inducing. She hopes to be a witch doctor!  I think it is important for us to identify with her and her struggle. Can a fictional character get some love. yo? 😛 😛

--DrJ2B

i think if JK put something about post-bacc program in the books...the children would understand what it is was if she gave a simple description on it. i mean these kids know every detail of this series....
plus it would be funny to hear kids talking about wanting to be in post bac programs hahaha. if they only knew the truth....

but now to talk about their clinical experience...i mean seriously speaking...you may not get gsw's but you will see things you will never see elsewhere. but too bad they arent a part of amcas. i didnt want to deal with a separate application. how about you?

We could also have long, extended discussions about our chances for being admitted to Hogwarts:

Harry -- When did you recieve you invitation to Hogwarts? I'm anxiously awaiting my letter by both post and flue, but my parents are muggles, so I'm worried the school might think I'm not a good fit...

Ron Weasley:
I thought Hogwarts wants diversity in their class?
I hope their financial aid packages are good, because I'm a damn po'boy. I'm wearing clothes that my three brothers and sister wore. You got a bar of soap I can get a few chisels off of Harry?

Hey Jlee!

Of course, I applied and as an "undergrad" at Hogwarts, I have a good shot. I did the extra application and it got back quickly because my owl is damn fast. I got an interview invite in my bathroom while I was taking a dump. It was a relieving moment in more ways than one. The application was not too bad, definitely not as bad at UChicago. Just one essay on how attending Hogwarts School of Medicine fits into my future plans. I had an interview there and I found travelling by floo powder to be rather cheap. I got there on time and without any soot on me to boot. I found the campus to be much better than Northwestern's campus. The Dark Forest is close by and so is the Hogwart's Undergrad School. It is my kind of town. Transportation is cheap because we can use our broomsticks and I heard that the new Nimbus 2004 will have room for textbooks. I saw Hermione at my interview. She is applying early decision. She wants to specialize in house elf diseases and complaints. All in all, it was a good time and it is my 2nd choice behind UPenn! I should hear by owl in March since it is a non-rolling school!

Hey all!

I received my invite letter via owl at the end of october and I interviewed there in mid-November. They take about 4-6 weeks after your app is complete to get back with an interview notice. They also start rejecting pretty soon and send a howler to do so. Hogwarts SOM loves diversity and as aformentioned, Hermione got an interview, so they will take any student regardless of parentage. When were you complete lyra? You should hear soon one way or another if you have been complete for a while. Ron, of course you can have some soap. Hogwarts SOM offers even more money than Duke, Stanford, and Cornell do. They have oodles of full scholarships given for merit and need. I wish you all the best of luck. Send me an owl if you have any more questions!

Hi all,

I'm still waiting for my inviation to Hogwarts SOM for an interview. Fingers crossed. I've only been complete since October.

I did recently interview at Beauxbatons SOM. Yes, I know, they are very different schools and Madame Maxine is, well, odd. But the clinical exposure there is great: a large giant (ha! pun) population from the nearby mountains and a considerable number of dragon-related traumas.

l.g.

I hope you don't mind me bringing us back to reality, unless you really are applying to Hogwarts SOM. I am a big Harry Potter fan, and in one of my med school interviews I was asked what was the most recent book I read. I told him Harry Potter, and he laughed at me. I hope I don't get rejected for mentioning this book. Oh well, I love the books and can't wait for the next movies and book 6 (hopefully) to come out soon!

If you remember from the last book, it shows that in the final years of schooling at Hogwarts, you can choose something similar to a major. The kids visit Arthur Weasly at the hospital and they tell you that, I think... So you can begin your medical wizard/witchcraft training at Hogwarts.

Gosh. I wish I was a character from that book... I want to apparate!

Hey all,

I wrote my PS with a Harry Potter theme. If that does not show how much I love the books and how much I have learned from them, then I do not know what to do. At my UPenn interview, the 4th yr student that interview just commented that I must really like Harry Potter and, of course, I agreed. I would not want to go to a medical school where they would reject a student who happens to like reading Harry Potter. That school would be way too stuck up and boring for my taste.
I heard that Rowling has already started writing the 6th book and she has already written the final chapter in Book 7, so she knows how she wants everything to end. She just has to get there in the next 2 books. I saw the movie trailer for the 3rd movie and it looks soooooooo good. My friend who studied abroad in Scotland last semester saw Hargrid's home from the 3rd movie and took a picture. It looks sooo cool.
I hope to get an acceptance from Hogwarts SOM. I didn't apply to Beauxbatons, but I heard that Hogwarts allows students to do some of their clinical rotations abroad so the students can get a feel for different patient populations and health systems. I heard that Beauxbatons SOM's main hospital is world-renowed especially for cauldron burns and memory charm backfires. Can anyone confirm this for me? I also heard that Durmstrang SOM has some interesting clinical rotations in a goblin town. Good luck everyone and may your wands be with you!

haha this is great. sdn is definitely the best source for both muggle and human SOMs. Its too bad they dont fill out the USNEWS survey....I would like to see how they rank with the other top schools. Tho I think they would be ranked pretty low seeing how they don't need NIH funding to run the research they perform there.

Hahaha...

Recently, all I've been reading are Harry Potters. Before I started interviewing, I quickly read "The Immortal Cell," just so I wouldn't have to say that Harry Potter was the last book I read...

I'm waiting til after the interview season is over to read book 5...I just can't get enough!

it kinda sucks when you read the books so fast because you are so into it...that when you get done in a couple of days.....its like....man. im done. that sucks.

and then you ask questions like when the next movie is coming out or when the next book is coming out...or debate whether you should read the old ones again.... haha

i just loooove HP... it's a nice diversion from the 24/7 studying that im doing lately. that's the only thing that's keeping me sane! hehe, this is the third time that im reading the 5th book!

I was going to go to Hogwarts for undergrad, but i was afraid i might have a problem with the conversion of classes. i mean, i can definitly have pulled off potions as chemistry class, but everything else? it would have severly limited my options, and I would have only been able to apply to Hogwarts SOM, which i wouldn't mind, but i like to keep my options open.

Hey all!

As a Hogwarts undergrad, I used my elective credits to take classes in what would be considered pre-med requirements. I actually used my Defense Against the Dark Arts for my Physics requirement. I was lucky to swing that one. For biology, I was able to use Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures. There are many loopholes if you look hard enough. I wish you all the best of luck with the application process. Hogwarts SOM has one of the best athletic facilities of any medical school (indoor and outdoor Quidditch fields). 😀
It seems that Lucius Malfoy is on the admissions committee but Dobby has our backs so we should not worry much about this. As always, may your wands be with you!

hi,

I really enjoyed harry potter (and i'm too dead to sound enthusiastic, I HATE all this time jerking and traveling called interviews).

Let me rank them (haven't read book 5 for moral reasons that go beyond my love of Harry Potter. I suppose it amounts to that I should not have to PAY for books that are not text books). okay, I also need to get in the library waitlist soon.

Good: Book 3, book 2, book 4, book 1 Not So excellent

The order I read them: 2, 1, 3, 4

1 was sorely lacking after I read chamber of secrets. That just set the standard too high. 1 had too much intro.

4, sadly, was so long it was intimidating. Nonetheless, I enjoyed it all the same. But, I was simultaneously intimidated.

Who else has read the 300 page fan fic versions of harry potter for 6 and 7??? they are sooo bizzare. I also strongly believed JK rowling will not right something like that. JK rowling is, sadly, now in a position where she has an obligation to the society and 9 to 10 year old kids. The lessons in the fan fic (don't trust anyone) just do NOT need to be taught to 10 years old.

Isn't it amazing how Harry's lessons from dumbledore are relevant (for kids) in a normal muggle society.

yeah thats why everyone loves her books...children and adults alike...she came up with an amazing idea for a book and fortunately for her it is doing extremely well and fortunately for us we can read something magical.

i thought 4 was the best tho...the triwizard tournament at the end was just awesome. no beating it....
i like them to be long now so that i dont get done with them too quickly...

no i havent read the fan fic versions..... where did you see those?
thatd be interesting to read.

This thread is awesome. I😍 HP
I'm at a lost for words because I'm so used to keeping separate personalities in the SDN forums and Harry Potter forums.

Hey toomuch!

Fell free to talk about HP here. We can start a discussion about what will be the career choice for the main 3 characters. In my and my friend's opinion, Hermione will be some sort of activist (the whole SPEW controversy), Harry will be the new Defense Against Dark Arts teacher (Book 5 perhaps implied this when he taught his friend and members of other houses about charms and spells to block dark spells), and Ron will be an auror (being that he rarely gets the glory and is always overshadowed by Harry and Hermione). I think it is fitting to see Ron in the most prestigious career because that will just come to show that the average person can rise above mediocrity. Such is the same with medical schools. Average applicants can get into very good medical schools. No need to lose hope. Dumbledore is always with you in spirit. As always, may your wands be with you and have some faith in this tideous and random medical school process.

one of the cooler things i have heard since being on sdn.....
there is always something we should keep hope in and it is that even if we are "average" applicants there is so much randomness in this application process that we should ALWAYS have some hope, even if it seems like we are going nowhere. its a long process and i hope everyone on this thread has everything work out the way they want it. 🙂

Well, I have read much of the fanfic for books 6 and 7. Did not like any one of them. As for future career options, I think a healer would be awesome. I can only imagine all the cool potions that pharmaceutical companies would want to get their hands on. I suppose I did alright on my OWLS, and hopefully I'll be able to take my NEWTS if I get accepted.

I think Harry will do good enough on his OWLS that he could become an Auror and eventual DADA teacher. I don't think Ron will. I hate to say it, but I think his desire for fame and glory will be his downfall. By the way things look in the book, he didn't do too well on his OWLS. Maybe he could be a Quidditch player or do something with chess. Hermione seems like the classic gunner, but already knows she will do better than her two best friends. She will probably get fantastic OWLS(can I say 45T), but I think she will get one bad score on one of them and it will really be disappointing to her. I think she wants to further SPEW, but I think after the end of the series she'll move on from SPEW and she'll get into something political concerning the future betterment of muggle/non-muggle relations and eventual Charms teacher at Hogwarts.
I definitely think Hogwarts SOM would be my first choice except I haven't heard from them post secondary yet because everything was sent late. However, I heard their non-rolling so I guess I won't be at a disadvantage if I get a later interview. Good luck to all.

tm

P.S. I did mention a star wars movie in one of my interviews and the interviewer seemed to role his eyes like it was an inappropriate topic for me to mention.

Hey all!

To Jlee, thanks for the compliment! 😀

To toomuch, I definitely see where you are coming from with your predications. I would love to see Ron succeed and become and auror, and despite the implications in the 5th book that he did not do well, we do not know this and as Rowling has done many a time, things may not always be as they seem. Indeed, he can perhaps be a Quidditch player (the 5th book shows that he is quite capable as a Seeker, that is when he is confident in his abilities and rises above teasing by the Slytherins). I agree about Hermione. I think she will do something in muggle affairs, perhaps something in the realm of law. I am not really sure about the whole being a Charms teacher though. Perhaps you can elaborate upon your reasons for saying that. I would be very interested to know why. As for Harry, I can see him becoming an auror in one light, but I think he would rather teach instead. It seems, as the story unravels, that his heroic acts are more about fulfulling an obligation than being adventuresome by nature. I think he does want more of a normal life and will choose teaching to achieve that goal. I can definitely see him being the Headmaster of Hogwarts in time.

Hogwarts SOM is definitely non-rolling. They send out the owls with their decision in early to mid-March. They start sending out rejections much sooner though for people they do not want to interview and use howlers to do so (I would not want to get one of those). All in all, it is not a bad wait and their brochure is so awesome and animated. As always the best of luck with everything and may your wants and faith be with you!

Hermione's strength seems to be charms - of course she's good at everything, but she really excells there. Think 112% on her first year final, and she's always throwing around little useful spells like water-repelling Harry's glasses. It would be easy to see her teaching transfiguration though, what with McGonnagal being a role model.

She could also easily become a social activist of some sort, if not too discouraged by SPEW (which obviously isn't heading well at all). I wonder if Rowling will ever let us know.

Hey Lara!

I guess you can make the argument for aptitude. Hermione is great at Charms but I feel like she is too high-strung to be a teacher. I think she would get bored as a teacher. If anything, she would have a job in the Ministry or something to that affect. In reference to SPEW, I would tend to agree. I doubt she will be discouraged though. She is way too stubborn. I am sure that issue will be resolved somehow but I think it will either be her realization that their situation no longer prompts enough attention when she was other things to deal with, but she seems to be on point with things like that. I am sure if Rowling put that in, something must come of it though. Such is the wondering we must deal with. In fact, I love thinking about what will happen next. Rowling has a huge burden on her shoulder. She has many things to resolve, one of which I would really like to see is how Neville situation is rectified. I wish his parents could be brought back to normal, but I do not think that will happen. All I know is that my heart broke when Neville put the bubblegum wrapper his move gave him into his pocket instead of in the trash as his grandmother beckoned him to do. I really want to see good things happen to Neville. I also would like to see Percy get slapped up. If he was my son, I would take him and spank him in front of the Ministry until he apologized. His behavior was atrocious. I would love to see Ron rise above his means and be something like an Auror. I feel he has much untapped talent that has always been overshadowed first by his overachieving brothers (okay maybe not the twins but they will be a legend after their fantastic departure from Hogwarts) and then by Harry. I feel it is his time to shine. Don't get me wrong. Hermione and Harry are awesome, but sometimes the dog must get his day. Whew! I babble too much. I just really love this series and I would love to hear opinions on what I have said and any new suggestions or thoughts.

On a side note, Hogwarts SOM just got a huge check from the Ministry for research and to improve the hospital. Woot woot!

Bumpity bump bump for all you HP fans that have not been able to chime in!

Hey Harry!

What have you been up to? Looking forward to your 6th year at Hogwarts? How are the Dursley's treating you now that you have a crew(Order of the Phoenix) watching your back? Are they cowering in fear?

Yo, keep this thread kickin'! Where are all the HP fans out there? Holla at this Gryffindor brotha! 😀

bump...hehe, i hope sirius will be back in book 6...he's just beneath the veil! 😀

Hey NYGirl12!

Ooooooooooooooo! That would be the hotness! I really hope that does happen as well as Neville'a parents recovering! Woot woot! 😛

Hey guys, how's it going, just wanted to pop in.
And mention to DrJ2B that I hate how Percy is in book 5, but the word on the streets is that he's being controlled by wormtail by the imperius curse, so I would give him just a little slack, I'm sure Voldemort was a worse gunner than he ever was.

tm

So what houses do you see yourselves in?

As much as I'd like to be in Gryffindor, I think I'm a Hufflepuff through and through.

Hey all!

Yo toomuch, thanks for the info. That would make a ton of sense to me. I was totally shocked when I read what Percy said and did and I was wondering about an explanation. I had wondered if Voldemort had something to do with it, but I thought I might be reaching. No doubt! Voldemort is such a doucebag anyway!

Hey twinklz! Why do you think you would be in Hufflepuff?

I really think I would be in Gryffindor. Some of my friends think I am the male version of Hermione! 😱 😱 While we are on the subject, what house would everyone else be in? 😛

---DrJ2B, of Gryffindor

only Gryffindor for me! 😀

I hope when rowling finishes her books, she'll write like a prequel to the first hp book.. explaining how lily and james met 😍

oooh, gryffindor for me as well 😍

Holla to all y'all awesome HP fans!

I heard Hogwarts SOM is sending out loads of interview invites this week, so the long wait for some of you is over!

I totally agree with you NYGirl12. A fellow Gryffindor! Would you also be an prefect like ickle Ronnie the prefect? If I was a prefect, I would always write up the nasty Slytherins!
 😛

I was wondering if any of you had any professors like those in Harry Potter, with similar personality traits and such. Holla at a Gryffindor! 😀

so i'm quite behind on this thread...

anyway, i totally agree w/ you JLee. i read book #5 in 3 days this past july (when i should've been working on amcas of course) and i had to force myself to put it down occasionally so i wouldn't finish it even faster.

it's such a long wait til the next book....

and i hope adcoms don't really laugh at me for loving harry potter or any other children's books for that matter... esp since i'm thinking i want to go into peds.

p.s. have any of you guys read the Lemony Snicket books? a kid i work with recommended it to me but i haven't gotten around to reading it yet

hmmmmmm Lemony Snicket? Never heard of them. Please shed some light about what it is about. Is it along the same lines as HP? 😉

I'd like to get my hands on some Harry Potter books, I heard they were really well written! Right now, Im reading the Lord of the Rings triology, and I just finished up the last book, so I can't wait for the movie to come out!
haha sorry about shifting focus, for you Harry Potter fans!
🙂

did u guys see the trailer for the new one? hermione looks really different for some reason

I can't wait till the movie comes out. Dumbledore (sp?) looks different, but they did a good job on his make up, there isn't a drastic change in his appearance

do you guys have a costco out there or something?
if you do you can get a box set of the harry potter books for relatively cheap. they are very good.

and to the guy that posted somewhere above me...who cares if some adcoms think its childish...i doubt they read it then.

i love reading childrens books because i love working with kids and they always ask me for good books to read.

Lemme see if I can recall some good ones I really liked...
*The Little Prince
*Harry Potter series
*Maniac Magee
*Holes
*Frindle
*Where the Red Fern Grows
*The Phantom Tollbooth
*The Hobbit
*Wrinkle in Time series
*Hatchet
*Cleary books are fun...
this is all I can remember right now...

but yeah. They all rule!

I havent seen the trailer yet for movie #3...maybe ill do a search for it online...

the original dumbledore had died I think, so that's why they have a new one 🙁

this is true.

The original guy that played Dumbledore, Richard Harris, died October 2002. His role will be taken over by Michael Gambon in the third movie.
