Does anyone know from experience, or have a source, that tells how much your parents' gross income can be and still be eligible for the HPSL? Even though, I'm an independent, I still wanted to look into this. But I don't want to have to ask my parents for their tax info if I'm not going to qualify anyway.

I did a search here, and it looks like no one's given an answer for this one. Anyway, I found this link to official guidelines for the loan, and it sounds like what they do is determine your EFC using the federal formula based on both your and your parents' income/assets. Check out section D(2).

Consequently, it sounds like your estimated need would match what it was for undergrad if you filled out the FAFSA for that. You can find a PDF on this site that gives you the federal formula for the EFC. I assume that you would complete it as if you're considered a dependent student.
