Hey there.
So I am considering doing HPSP with the Air Force and I want to go into either emergency med or surgery.
Reading through a lot of these posts, people seem to think the surgery/ER training in military residencies is less intense than civilian ones...Also there are none anywhere close to where I and my whooole family live, so I'd like to do a civilian residency.
What are the chances of being able to do this? Is "i want to stay in New York and do a residency in a NYC Hospital" a good enough reason to get a deferral if I rank that first?
And what about fellowships? If I decide I want to do surgery and I want to do a Trauma or Critical Care fellowship, how does that factor in? Can I do a civilian residency and a military fellowship? Does that count as "neutral" years of service?
Thanks!
