I'm strongly considering a Navy Health Professions Scholarship and I am wondering if there are any practicing ODs who have been in this program before? I am married and have a 11 month old daughter and think that this would be a good step for myself and my family. If any of you have accepted this scholarship or know of someone who has, please tell me as much as you can. I'm particularly interested in what you are currently doing, where you are stationed/have been stationed, if you are pleased with your decision, why you did or did not accept it, so on and so forth.
I really appreciate the help and information!

I BRIEFLY looked in to it. One of the reasons why it wasn't very attractive to me was the fact that you are committing to it for the next 8 years of your life.

I, too, find myself intrigued by the Army's/Navy's/Air Force's H.P.S.P.s (they seem to be about identical to one another), and should be interested to read of others' experiences with the opportunities.

It does seem, for one thing, after graduation, you commit four, not three, years of your life to mandatory service (unless, somehow, you plan to take the scholarship for only three years); do a residency, and add a year to that obligation. Also, the pay during the four years during which you work for the government appears to be very low — maybe a third of what you'd make at an optical outlet (I could be wrong about this: I don't recall where I got my numbers).
