I think 50-60 seems about right. Our schedule is mostly 10-hour shifts and we do 4 on, 1 off, 4 on, 2 off. I think that works out to about working 22 ten-hour shifts in a 30-day period which gets you in that 50-60 hours/week spot. That does not include conference time and other outside obligations (leading an intern conference, preparing a M&M talk, trauma conference talk, combined cardiology conference talk, etc.).

I think we do somewhere in the low-to-mid 50s per week when we're in the ER, plus 5 hours of lecture. Then it seems like there's always something else that comes up that will take up a few hours a week. Plus there's always studying, but that doesn't count. Some off-service rotation are light (40 hours), others (*cough* MICU *cough*) are, well, not so light.

R1-60, R2-55, r3-50 (ish) + 4-8 hrs cleanup time

3 or 4 year residency? My program was a 4yr and so we probably worked fewer shifts than the norm (especially PGY3/4) but we had more electives and other requirements. Most of us were glad to have the extra time to moonlight.
