I am currently a student about to begin my Junior year in High School. I know I want to be a psychaitrist but I am very confused about what psychology major I will study in college. I also have no idea where I will go to college. I take all honors classes expect math at a private school and I have a 3.8 GPA (I hope to have it to a 4.0 when I graduate). What are some excellent colleges I should check out? And does anyone want to explain the medical school process after college?

-confused student 😕

For psychiatry, you won't have to have any particular major in college so long as you have completed pre-med classes (generally a year of each physics, biology, chemistry and organic chemistry, all with labs). Then you will do 4 years of medical school (non-psychiatric specific) followed by a 4 year psychiatry residency. If you're thinking more of a clinical psychologist then that's a separate path.

Yea...personally, I think it's way too early to be set on one specialty. You'll be shutting yourself off to exploring as much as you can in college. That said, if you're interested in psychiatry, I'd try contacting some psychiatrists in your local hospital to get some shadowing done.

Since you're still in high school try taking ap psychology, I know they're not the same but you will learn basic background behind psycology and psychiatry.

When you get to college it doesn't matter what you major in as long as you take the medical school pre requisetes:
1 year of biology
1 year of general chemistry
1 year of organic chemistry
1 year of physics
1 semester of calculus
at the end of your junior year (traditionally) you take the MCAT which is based on courses listed above, and apply to medical schools in summer, you will be attendin the interviews through out your senior year and if you get accepted you'll start medical school in fall after graduating college.
