UWorld says that herpetic gingivostomatitis, caused by HSV-1 primary infection, is most common in children ages 1-3. Can someone please explain why that age group would be most common, and how do they contract it?

Although it technically could be contracted vaginally (despite that being normally HSV2 > HSV1), I would think that would appear in the neonate, rather than in children 1-3 years-old.

What am I missing?
