Am I the only one here who didn't want to be a pediatric neurosurgeon when they were in the 7th grade?

While growing up my first interests were in insects, video games, and guitars.

I mean, if medicine is always what you've wanted to do, then great.

I just can't believe that I'm in the minority.

i wanted to be a spy and go on secret missions.

I wanted to enter medicine since I was 14 or 15, but before that I wanted to be a singer, model 😳 , vet, chemist, professional pianist, and the list goes on and on 😉 .

I wanted to be an artist until I was 10 (I was Picasso for Halloween when I was four). THen horse racing jockey, then equine veterinarian, then a writer for Spin magazine, then an animal behaviorist (for gorillas)...then a video game developer...then a vet again...then a biology professor..and here I am now...

Oh, I forgot-- I applied and was accepted to architecture school between game developer and vet.

I wanted to play pro basketball, to be an astronaut, to be the next Bill Gates, to be a computer programmer, and to be a pilot just to name a few.

I didn't want to become a pediatric neurosurgeon in grade 7, and I sure as hell don't want to be one now either!

Interests as a kid: ponies, kitties, caterpillars, dissecting (previously dead!) worms, etc. Eventually realized humans were even more interesting than animals.

Pro football, baby. Pro football.

I guess I'll settle on being a doctor. 😀

I wanted to be an archaeologist, volcanologist, and to fly for the Blue Angels. I still dig archaeology....get it....dig?? hehehe damn I'm tired.

Astronaut mostly, still want to be that. 🙂 They'll need doctors in space, won't they?

I liked bugs, computers, and astronomy. Didn't really think about medicine until college.

I remember a time in grade school when the teacher asked the class who wanted to go to college. I was one of the three students who didn't raise my hand. As it turns out I am maybe one of the three who did. I hated school back then and if anything probably wanted to be a professional wrestler.

Little kids are supposed to be more intersted in playing than going to school for another 15-20 years. I'm sure that there are some people who have always wanted to go into medicine and made the right choice, but I think a lot of people who have had it planned out that early go into it because they think it is expected of them or they want to do something prestigious and that is the first thing that comes to mind (e.g. mommy and daddy are doctors so I will be one to - I once tutored a girl like that, I knew her parents were both doctos before she even told me, those types are usually easy to spot).

I don't think you can possibly be sure what you want to do with your life at that age. A few people might get the idea at a young age, test it, and find that it is the right one, but a lot of people who "know" that early are the ones who go into medicine for the wrong reasons if you ask me.

I didn't decide until after my first semester of college and after a semester working at Walt Disney World.

I wanted to be an astronaut or President (lol).

When I was four (according to my parents, I don't remember this), I told them I wanted to be a pony when I grew up.

I *DO* remember being in kindergarten and we had to draw a picture of what we wanted to be when we grew up. ALL the girls were either teachers or nurses, and ALL the boys were either policemen or firemen. I told the teacher that I wanted to be a Forest Ranger on horseback. (Partially because I had met one while my family was camping the summer before, also partially because that meant I got to include a horse in my drawing).

Then I wanted to be an astronaut.

Then I wanted to be a Vet, but high school chemistry was such a miserable experience that I changed my mind.

Then I wanted to be a police officer... and became one. It wasn't until I had an early mid-life crisis that medicine came into view! Little did I know how small an obstacle chemistry (in its various forms) are, when its standing in between you and and something you truly want. 😀

My interests seemed to depend on what I was interested at the time:

I'd always had a leaning towards science. But, in elementary school, I wanted to go into marketing because Stacey's mom (from The Babysitter's Club books) was a marketer and she got to go to all these cool shows/shops to buy stuff for stores.

Early high school, I wanted to go into computer graphics/special effects after seeing a "behind-the-scenes" show of Independence Day and watching how they did all the special effects. I also wanted to work in the FBI (from watching The X-Files) doing who-knows-what. I could still do it as an MD (like Scully!)

When figuring out what to major in college, I was crazy to think of going into computer science AND computer engineering. (Props to you who did, I could never handle it!)

I don't think it's very interesting now, but I collected rock for many years during elementary school and I wanted to be a geologist. 😕 🙄

The babysitter's club books were the coolest 😀

:: insert girl with handcuffs joke here :: 😀

Believe it or not, I really wanted to be an anesthesiologist from when I was four. Probably had something to do with me having a BUNCH of surgery. I was always amazed that this guy would put me to sleep and wake me up on command. Thought it was waaaaaaaaaaay cool. Almost as cool as being able to actually pronounce anesthesiologist when you're four. 😀

Nice story 👍 Seems more realistic than these God callings.

When I was a kid, I wanted to be Tony Dorsett or Earl Campbell. Then I wanted to be Luke Skywalker or Han Solo. Now, I want to be a med student LARPer.

lawyer...then in college I took law classes...god is that **** boring!!!!

Hehe. I can't believe I haven't posted here before.

Let's see, when i was five, I wanted to be a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader, to please my dad. (Yes, all the psychological problems you are thinking have since applied) I had a great male role model for feminine issues. 🙄

It occurred to me for awhile in middle school that I wanted to be doctor. Then I realized how much work it was going to be, and I couldn't bring myself to learn the preamble to Declaration of Independence, as assigned. 👎

In high school, I was going to be a great novelist, and write the eminent great American novel that just encompassed the human condition, Americana, andeverything that is right and true, if not necessarily good. Then I found out there's no money in it, and I can't sit still or type.

So I became an unwed, teenage mother instead. What a wonderful path I chose! The spiritual wonder, the focus, the kids......

It wasn't until I got back into school, and realized how much I loved science and the lab, and that I had a way of connecting with people, especially in their darkest of times, did it dawn on me that I may have found something that would consume my soul and focus for much of the next two decades. After ten years of part time undergrad, I'm on the verge of acceptance into a dual degree program and 6-7 more years (at least). Then my kids will have a brain surgeon as a mommy. 👍 😍

 Tony Dorsett was (is) the man! 👍

I wanted to be a fireman when I was in elem school. Then I realized as a girl I would never be a fire'man'. I also wanted to be an artist but I can't draw so that didn't go so far. Then in middle school I really did want to be a neurosurgeon but that was because I wanted to be a doctor but didn't like blood and the brain doesn't bleed. Then I realized I have shaky hands and no one wants someone with shaky hands cuttin on their brain. Now I want to be an astronaut (there have been MD's in space) but my eyes are too bad.

wanted to be a pilot since I was in grade school. Still kinda do.

I really really really wanted to be a sniper. Still kinda do, but there's no way I'd be able to lie in one spot for more than 5 minutes. I also wanted to be a fighter jet pilot, but my eyes are too bad. So doctor it is.

I didn't want to be a pediatric neurosurgeon when I was a kid I just wanted to be a general surgeon. NOW I want to do pediatric surgery. But I also wanted to be an entomologist on the side when I was a kid.

fighter pilot, vet, artist, photo journalist, fashion designer, spy, ballet dancer... ooh the list goes on.. and did so until last year

I wanted to be a marine biologist until i found out I actually had to get IN the water

then I wanted to be an artist and live the fast paced city life............ then i realized how that is soooo not me...........

then I wanted to be a national geographic photographer........... but alas, that's damn hard to do.........

so I decided I could still do bio, still create art (helloo... surgery.. could it get any more creative?) and still travel the world as a Physician... what a weird path I've created for myself 😍

I've always wanted to be on the U.S. Ski Team....but on top of that, I used to want to be an archaologist because I though Indiana Jones was wicked rad.

This is what growing up in Raleigh will do to you...

I actually wanted to be Shaq when I was in elementary school, which is kinda embarrassing considering I used to tell people this and I'm a skinny white kid.

To this day, I still play Street Fighter 2 turbo. Actually, me and some classmates are planning to make a '' game '' room in the student lounge (in the dorms, of course 😎 ). It's time to show off my elite hand-eye coordination 😉

I never considered being a doctor until my sophomore year of college. Before this, I'd wanted to be a writer or a musician. Since I can still do both of these even when I'm a doctor, I don't think any of my dreams have to be neglected. 🙂

I guess I'm in the minority here, having wanted to be a doctor quite literally since I was about three years old. I didn't know there was such a thing as a "specialty" back then, or that you could earn money doing it, I just wanted to make people feel better and found surgery fascinating. I would watch it on TV even though my parents had to look away. I briefly flirted with other possible professions throughout my life (particularly a creative streak in me that thoroughly enjoys life on the stage) but the field of medicine has always been close to my heart. Nowadays I try to incorporate all my interests into my life so I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything, so I guess that's why it's relatively easy for me to focus on my professional goal.

I wanted to be a garbageman. I don't remember why, perhaps because I liked to clean things up. My apartment is a mess, so I guess not.

I was the least ambitious person I knew at 15. My previous concerns related to avoiding arrest and figuring out how my girlfriend and half my friends ended up in either rehab or jail. Thankfully, college knocked some sense into me.

You know... although I didn't want to be a doctor starting at my moms 19th week of gestation, my parents DID buy me one of those doctor kits, with play steth, bp cuff, "medicine" etc. It came in a tan "briefcase" and I played with it CONSTANTLY.

I had totally forgotten about it, but I was at their house this past weekend when the pastor's kids came over. They started pulling toys out of the hall closet and LO AND BEHOLD, there was my old doctor play kit!!!! I asked mom, she said it was the same... she kept a few of my old toys that were in good condition for visiting kids to play with.

Anyway, I got down on the floor and played with the kids. I forgot how irritating it is to hit the loooooong slide when you play Candyland!!

This is my fall back career....

When you think about it, being a doc makes no sense so it really shouldn't be anyone's first choice IMO.....

think about it:

1. Helping people? be a nurse...
2. No money
3. The chicks got chased away by the HMO's (with the money)
4. We thought our Mom's were anoying...try wearing a beeper 24/7
5. Social respectability ...or are docs treated special by society like the Short Bus Kids?? (hmmm..you never thought about it that way, did you)
6. 200k in debt for an education that you basically teach yourself (no one goes to lectures in med school, from what i am told)
7. Your mom tells her friends her baby is a doctor....ok, you got me on this one... 🙂

But you gotta do something with your life and i can't pro surf, so Med School here i come!

I completely forgot I wanted to be surfer when I was younger. How did that dream die? Oh right, I moved 1200 miles away from the ocean.

Hmmm...When I was in elementary school, I used to dream about marrying a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader. My parents even put a Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders calendar in my Christmas stocking one year. In a parallel universe where you had become a cheerleader and I had some football talent, we might have been a dream match.

When I was in 1st grade my mom got called to reprimand me because evidently I'd started a business in the back of the class.

I was totally banking with all my friendship bracelet sales, and I even had a sign up: "Ask for no credit, none shall be given."

But hey, I still don't know what I wanna be when I grow up... so no hurry here... 🙂

I wanted to be a savvy business man ..

but then realized corporate is run by politics

In 7th grade I used to pretend I couldn't read well so that we would spend the entire class reading out loud rather than doing actual work.
