Anyone here have (or had) to take a human anatomy or physiology course for a vet pre-req? I can take either but don't know which is going to be more beneficial from a vet school perspective. Opinions on the classes themselves also welcome. 🙂

I took both human and animal anatomy and physiology in undergrad. Vet school goes so far beyond undergrad in those two topics that I don't think it matters which you take. And, really, a mammal is a mammal to a certain extent, so a lot of the human phys stuff is pretty comparable to the animal phys stuff.

I was going to say something similar.

But really, make sure you have the pre-reqs you need for vet school and if not, take the one you need. Otherwise physiology would probably be marginally more helpful than anatomy, probably because it won't really change much between animal and human as opposed to anatomy (some different body parts and terminology).

I took both in undergrad and I found them both helpful, but physiology probably moreso. There are more differences in human anatomy vs. vet med anatomy (especially when it comes to ruminants, horses, etc).

I think there are several schools that require physiology. For instance, I couldn't apply to UC Davis because I took one A&P class but not the adjoining class. They want you to have both or a full semester of physiology. Same thing for at least 2-3 other schools. However, one A&P class covered Oregon State's pre-req.

Thanks all. This one is for Iowa State, which takes either class. Did you feel like you needed to take anatomy before taking physiology?

You will learn some anatomy in a physiology class because you have to in order to understand the physiology. If anatomy isn’t a pre req for the physiology class you won’t be expected to know any anatomy. I agree physiology is more helpful. It’s just more complex so if you’re going to have some base info go for physiology.

Current ISU VM1. I highly suggest taking physiology as I took a comprehensive A&P and did much better in Anatomy than Physiology and having more of a background would have been much more helpful.

Thanks for that.
