Did anyone else read that email from NJMS about the new grant to create a humanism program?

Seems interesting because they're going to provide 10 students with full scholarships, but looks like there's no separate application (they'll be considering entering students for the program)

yeah... i wanted to see if it were possible to apply into that program... but no separate application though =(

It would be nice to know whether/not you were getting the full scholarship before deciding to attend NJMS. I'm a little wary of choosing NJMS just for the chance of getting into the special program.

Hi guys,

I'm not too familiar with NJMS, but I do have a friend who has been accepted there and was already offered the full tuition scholarship that you're talking about. They even sent him to meet some dean of the school at his home, and told him that if he went there he could play a strong role in designing the humanism program...

So I guess you will be notified if you're one of those lucky 10 (I don't know how he heard, sorry).

How do you qualify for those scholarships?

egrets,

do you know if your friend had really good stats?

and what is an example of good stats? (i.e....3.9gpa and 35mcat)...

This is not fair...I want a full ride too.

Actually he had stellar stats, aside from being from NJ, just about as good as you can get... harvard undergrad, stellar GPA, stellar MCAT... he's one of the smartest guys I have ever met, and his decision will probably come down to NJMS w/ full ride (oh, plus a stipend of like $10k/year), Harvard, or Hopkins, or Columbia... etc etc etc.

you can PM me if you want more info. But really, just trust me, he's cream of the crop. One of those gunners who is such a gunner they wouldn't spend their time on SDN even if they knew about it. 😀

oh, no... i'm talking perfect GPA (>3.9) and perfect MCAT (>42), for this guy at least...

I don't see why smart people should get school scholarships...+pissed+
Scholarship should go to poor average joes/janes who are too poor to afford anything and to dumb to be awarded any outside scholarships.....right? 👍 I mean if you are poor and average, a scholarship is a great incentive to pursue higher education.
If you are already smart, you can probably get lots of outside scholarships PLUS...you probably don't need a monetary incentive for you to continue your education 😛

Thats my 2 cents.

When I win the lottery, I will have a scholarship for the "Average joe"...MAX gpa is 3.7 and minimum is 3.5gpa...but since A LOT of people fall within this range, my scholarship is built to be competitive right from the bat.

actually, looks like I was wrong-

by "entering students" they meant all those accepted.

so although there's no separate application, they're going to review all the accepted students' applications to see who would fit (seems like an awesome program), and i guess make decisions in the next 1-2 months.

Yeah but they probably mean is they will review the file/application of those with stats similar to that whichNo egrets posted (4.0 and 45mcats).

No egrets,

Do you know if your friend accepted the offer?

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH !!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the program sounds excellent, not just for the full scholarship, but the whole premise of being more humanistic in the practice of medicine.. I bumped into a member of the adcom today at work, and asked about the program and how they select folks. She indicated that the committee chooses applicants that have superior stats (she threw out 40 mcat and 3.9 gpa, but I think it was just as an example, not a cutoff), and a strong dedication to community service (she used the example of being in the peace corps).. So, while I consider myself pretty humanistic, my stats are certainly not superior... Not sure if I can hold out for BB's "Average Joe" scholarship, so the best I can hope for is $500 from something on Fastweb...

He is still holding out for acceptances from the non-rolling schools before he makes a final decision. Yeah, makes me sick too, and I'm not even from jersey. 🙄

I am sure this scholarship would be very tough to get. Most likely, it is an incentive to get those who most likely have acceptances at big-name universities to go to NJMS.

I made up my mind about borrowing a while back for this same reason. If they pay your tuition, you must be pretty damn good... and I'm no where close to that standard.

Oh please...don't let their "little" scholarship tell you that you are not good enough or not deserving.....we are all great, they just don't have enough scholarships to give us all...right?😛

I guess that's another way of looking at it... "The world doesn't recognize my brilliance!" :meanie:

When I talked to the admissions dept, the Admissions director said that she doesn't know what's the criteria yet (other than service + academic merit).

I asked her, "Has anyone of the 10 been selected yet?" She said no. Then I asked, "So all 10 have yet to be selected?" She said yes. She also said that she hopes to get this process "started" or "done" (?) in the next 4-6 weeks, and that this has nothing to do with your financial aid... this scholarship is purely determined by the Admissions Dept or a special committee that is under the admissions dept.

Two things are possible--maybe she wasn't being fully open and honest, or maybe the Harvard candidate that another poster talked about hasn't accepted the offer (?)

I'd not be surprised if they say something else to someone else, because she doesn't seem to have a fixed idea as to what they're looking for. It's still "written on water" so to speak.

Please, I don't want to get into any arguments...

I think you're right-
I was told that the process should be completed in the next 4-6 wks week. however, i didn't ask about what they were looking for, etc.

i guess it would make sense that they are shooting to pull exceptional students from other schools, but being that it's a humanism program, I would assume both service and an great interest in social medicine would be keypoints they're looking for.

Anyone hear from NJMS about this scholarship yet? Any winners? If so, could you please let us in on any details... whatever you can give?

Hey,

I know some of the people have been notified, perhaps all 10. I'm not sure about the whole picking/acceptance, but for mine, there is an acceptance deadline in a week or so with a non-refundable deposit - so it seems to be non-binding (I don't think you can be legally bound this early anyway).

My guess is some people will have turned down this offer sometime this month/next month, and they will make more offers from there. Being selected seems to entail the scholarship, being involved with designing the humanism program, and perhaps research/activities in that arena with faculty mentors. It is exciting for many reasons, but I think there is a good amount of work left to do in creating the exact program and the students' role in it.

It seems to me that they will have this whole deal wrapped up by May, so if you are considering NJMS and other schools, I think you'll have a chance to see if you're offered a scholarship before limiting yourself.

Hey periodic, could you tell us what those that have been offered this scholarship have in terms of scores/extracurriculars?

I can only speak for myself...I'll PM you some details.
