Anybody else on SDN enjoying the beautiful weather? Penn State thankfully closed campus today, so I've been in my apartment attempting to finish my Tuft's app and praying that the power stays on. lol

Hahaha yeah it is, I keep checking the porch to see how my bike is doing. Yeah, I told myself I was going to get a ton of work done tonight since the hands-on-labs for the pre-vet club were cancelled and the place where I work closed, but I took a nap instead. lol The power at my place has been flickering on and off so I'm a bit nervous....

me!! 88 and sunny on this tropical island most every day! 😀 oh wait...i think you were being sarcastic and referring to that little rain storm ya'll are having right now...my bad! 😉 i'll be sure to think of you as i am snorkeling and lying out on the beach (okay not really as I have class and 4 exams coming up, but i did go twice in the last 5 days haha)

Please, you know you would rather be here basking in the 40 degree weather and 60 mph winds. [insert more sarcasm here] lol 😉 actually snorkeling at the beach sounds pretty amazing, I am jealous. That's also pretty awesome you have time to snorkel while you are in classes. 🙂

I'm in Oregon where it's raining every day. I don't know what you people are complaining about with "Hurricane Sandy." 😛

I kid, stay safe! 😀

i was JUST telling my friend how much i love that its 88 degrees here year round and how i dont miss fall/winter/spring one bit (also, the lack of seasons makes the time just fly down here, its really amazing).

and yeah, the reef stuff here is amazing. these were my new finds from this weekend:
http://reefguide.org/carib/pixhtml/chainmoray5.html
http://reefguide.org/carib/pixhtml/smoothtrunk2.html

and from a FB friend: "Hey folks at home, enjoy Sandy! You wanted the beach to come to you and we have provided! Oh? You didn't want the sand in the form of a hurricane? My apologies. Some things get lost in translation. 😉"

Power went out on campus over here while I was in the library for my work shift, and my on campus apartment block was the last part of campus to get power back. Really hoping my 8 am biochem lab tomorrow gets cancelled...although I'm not sure how we'll work out making it up then.

That would be so awesome. 🙂 I am definitely a summer person so I would be loving that weather too. I am planning on applying to Ross U this year, so maybe I'll get to enjoy the Caribbean scene too.
OMG I am so jealous! I am SCUBA certified, and I would absolutely love to check out those reefs! Definitely a beautiful place to attend school. How do you like the school down there btw?
In response to the FB post, yeah, when I said I missed going to the beach, this isn't what I had in mind. lol!

yeah we had 2 days of classes cancelled including a biochem exam that i have no idea how we're going to make up everything at this point.

haven't studied one bit of biochem in the last 2 days. hmmmmm. 🙄

it is definitely windy and raining outside, no power outages though yet in my area. it does look like new jersey and new york are being hit worse than philly though.

Oh wow that sucks you had to be at work while the power was out. Yeah I'm hoping my anatomy lab is cancelled tomorrow morning too, I don't feel like trudging back to campus tomorrow in the storm. lol

I LOVE it here. its a really pretty island with a nice set of locals. the school is really awesome too. http://doctorinthesand.blogspot.com/ my blog with fun stories and pretty pictures 🙂

Ross is much more likely to get tropical storms and hurricanes than we are because we are *almost* too far south for it all. i know they had some pretty severe flooding from TS Rafael just a few weeks ago (just something to think about, because it wasn't something I gave serious consideration until I was here. the infrastructure is that of a third world country, supplies come in by boat weekly. it doesn't take much to cut you off completely from the outside world. may not seem so scary until you're actually on an island!)

classes cancelled today and tomorrow which includes physics exam that was supposed to be tomorrow. supposedly rescheduled for thursday, but we only have a 1 hr. lecture then instead of 2 hrs., so not quite sure how that will go in terms of shorter exam or what.

NOT AT ALL looking forward to driving to work tomorrow morning.

and my dog HATES it. I've had to carry her down the first five stairs to some grass, she goes to the bathroom really quickly under a large umbrella, and then turns right back for the house, tail between her legs.
the indoor/outdoor cat smarted up really quickly and hasn't asked to go out all day and used his litter box. indoor only kitty is just so excited that everyone is home again for her entertainment!

Me either. I legit didn't get out of bed until like 1:30 today and have pretty much been watching Harry Potter since then.

Super glad my apartment hasn't flooded since I have a basement apartment. Also glad we haven't lost power for the same reason.

It's windy here. The rain kept me up because it pounds into some part of our new apartment. Sounds like rocks hitting the side of our place.

I'm in the Maritime provinces. Luckily we won't get the brunt of it.

All my fun things today are cancelled (riding lesson, swing dance, and personality psych, although that last one wouldn't have class today anyway) but I still have to go to 8 am biochem lab. 🙄

We haven't had power since 3pm yesterday and probably won't have power for a few days if I had to guess. The outage area that I'm in is a result of 82 outages and is affecting 21k people. Most of my state doesn't have power. I'm sitting in a Panera now trying to stay sane.

Haven't heard from my mother since before the storm started :-/ Parts of her town flooded, but as far as I can tell, nothing direclty near her. She's ~5 miles from the Sound, so should have missed the bulk of that. Her street isn't really prone to flooding and the house is set back quite a bit. Just hoping that she ran her cell phone battery down or something.

My father is also without power, but luckily, his house stayed dry. He's set up on a little bit of a hill so even though most of his town is underwater, he's in good shape. Some of my favorite restaurants and shops are completely gone though 🙁

The island is a mess though -all bridges/tunnels still closed, no idea when they are reopening. Absolutely no public transportation, island parkways still closed, >1 million without power. Looking at the pictures is making me sad. So much water. Hoping they get the airports up and running smoothly before Friday, since my Dad's supposed to be visiting.

N.J. seems to have buffered Philly from the worst of it. Remind me not to make any mean Jersey jokes for a while.

NYC too. my sister goes to school at NYU and she said her dorm is completely out of power, there are fires in the city, shattered glass revolving doors, a dangling crane, flooding waist deep if not more in the street, trees down........not sure if all of these still apply but it was definitely crazy there.

NYU medical center lost power as well, and the backup generators failed. Mass chaos ensued as 200+ patients had to be evacuated. What a mess.

yeah coney island hospital also had a fire. i think a lot of the backup generators are failing, my sister's dorm was supposed to have power as well.

we got sooooooooo lucky here in philly but i'm scared for how long it's going to take for nyc and nj to recover

Looks like we got lucky here...it was pretty anticlimactic, actually, the weather's pretty much back to normal and everything's getting un-cancelled.

I feel so bad for all you east-coasters! Be safe out there!

I was looking at pictures today. The clean up alone!

I hope everyone is staying safe!

I saw pictures of the subways after the flooding was gone. That looks like it will take a long time to clean up. Sludge everywhere.

Half of my moms town (my hometown) is literally gone. There were 30 house fires yesterday, 5 of which could not be responded to because they were located on the barrier islands which were inaccessible due to bridges near collapse. Half of my hometown is under 3-4 feet of water and over 1 million people in my area are without power. She is expected to be without power for at least 7 days, and she's in the "safe" part of town. The town began calling in search and recovery teams, and they've been rescuing people in their homes by boat. So far, 12 people are confirmed dead..

This is the most devastating thing that's ever happened to my hometown...

I am so sorry EdinBelle! I am thinking good thoughts for your mom and your hometown.

Wow, I'm so sorry EdinBelle 🙁

Sending lots of good thoughts your mom's way!

My family in NJ weathered the storm okay. No power but they do have cell service. Our basketball hoop fell and hit my dad's car, so that's a bit of damage, but nothing that can't be fixed.

We were pretty charmed.

Kept on watching radar returns and seeing the red areas to the north of us, to the south of us, to the east of us, to the west of us. It is like everywhere got hit except for Philly.

And the eye passed right over us... we just missed the wall and all the surrounding surge. Pretty freaky. Almost like someone had "protection".

Hope everyone in the northeast stays safe!

Just cold and windy here in TN, but the Great Smoky Mountains about an hour away have a lot of snow--about 8 inches I think. Drifts of 4 feet in some places.

Finally talked to my sister! 😍
She and my mother were trapped in the house due to all the fallen trees in the area. Their house is fine, but literally every street around them had a tree across it. There was no cell phone service or power so they were pretty much in a black hole until one of the trees got moved and they could drive ~15 minutes to a parking lot that had service.

glad to hear they are doing ok

Our house at the seashore was totally pummeled with the storm. Pictures from just down the street show houses flooded almost up to the second floor :-(. It's not good when the beach meets the bay across the whole island...

At least we're all safe, although my grandmas (in NJ) won't get power back until next Monday.

Philly was super lucky.

No power still and we probably won't have it for a few days. It's making studying for the impending doom Thurs and Fri really tough. I don't get home from work/class before it's dark outside so I'm packing everything up each evening and studying on campus. Also means no showers or decent food. This is a big pile of unfun, but it could be worse.

Good wishes to everyone in an affected area. I hope everyone's families are safe and accounted for.

If you are on an island that is less than a mile wide, and you ignore 2 days of mandatory evac orders.... Don't get pissy when the first responders can't get to you right away! It's not their fault you decide to stay behind and there are now no bridges to your island, and all the landing docks for boats got washed away. Seriously, people. "I want to leave NOW" is NOT a good response when they have already told you that they will try to get Black Hawks and the Guard out there tomorrow to air lift you out.

So far, it hasn't been bad here in Nova Scotia. My hometown was pummeled by thunderstorms this morning. That's an hour south from me. According to the radar, a massive thunderstorm system is heading our way. Thunderstorms this time of year is weird.

After Katrina I remember there being a group of volunteers that went to the area to rescue animals left behind. Have any of you heard of something similar going on in the affected areas of Hurricane Sandy?

I haven't, but there was a ton of PR about all of the shelters (around here, at least) being pet friendly.

still no power in my family's neck if the woods. their power company still has 800,000 out and is telling them it might still be another week. my mother can't even leave her house due to downed power lines and trees

Wow, that is crazy. Does she have access to (or at least a stockpile of) food, clean water, and necessities? Being stranded like that would really suck.

luckily they have a few conveneince stores and grocery stores within walking distance, so will be able to stock up if needed. the perks of suburbia! and thank goodness for fireplaces (and lots of new/free firewood!)

Is your dad going to be able to visit you like planned?
